It adds height and lightness to the border without becoming heavy. The many small, closely packed lip-shaped flowers glow in a warm rose-red colour, creating a full and vibrant display.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fresh green foliage is elongated and lightly hairy, giving the plant a soft appearance. Rub a leaf between your fingers and the familiar aromatic scent of sage is released.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e'Rose Queen' flowers from June through August. If you cut back the spent flower stems after the first bloom, you are often rewarded with a second flowering later in summer, provided the weather is favourable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eSalvia × superba\u003c\/em\u003e 'Rose Queen' is also highly attractive to bees and bumblebees, which readily visit the flowers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow, where and when to plant woodland sage\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSalvia is a perennial plant that can be planted year-round. The rhizomes can be planted immediately upon arrival. Plant the roots deep enough so that the young green leaves are just above the soil surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlant it in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal, as excess water drains away quickly and keeps the roots healthy. Heavy clay soils can be too wet; improve them with compost if necessary to enhance structure and drainage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlant \u003cem\u003eSalvia × superba\u003c\/em\u003e 'Rose Queen' in the middle of the border or in pots. It combines beautifully with white salvias such as \u003cem\u003eSalvia nemorosa\u003c\/em\u003e 'Schneehügel' or with the slightly lower \u003cem\u003eOxalis deppei\u003c\/em\u003e 'Iron Cross'.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCare\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProvide sufficient water, especially during dry periods. A layer of mulch around the plant helps retain moisture and keep the soil cool.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the first flowering in summer, the spent flower stems are cut back to encourage a second bloom. The sage commonly used in cooking is a different species: \u003cem\u003eSalvia officinalis\u003c\/em\u003e. White sage used as incense, \u003cem\u003eSalvia apiana\u003c\/em\u003e, is also a different species; white flowers do not make 'Schneehügel' an incense sage.
