Organic double tulip: 'Alison Bradley'

Some tulips catch your eye straight away, and we think 'Alison Bradley' is a good example. The flowers have a deep purple colour that sometimes leans towards wine red. As each flower opens, more and more petals become visible, making it look almost like a peony.

We think this tulip looks its best among lighter colours. Plant it beside white or soft pink tulips and the dark flowers will stand out naturally. As it does not grow particularly tall, it is also suitable for pots and planters.

'Alison Bradley' flowers in April and May and reaches around 40 cm in height. The sturdy stems support the heavy flowers surprisingly well. We also cut a few each year for a vase indoors.

How, where and when should you plant tulip bulbs?

Tulip bulbs need a cold winter to flower well. Plant them from October until the ground freezes. The sooner the bulbs can establish roots, the better prepared they will be for spring.

Plant the bulbs about 10 cm deep and around 15 cm apart. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot where excess water can drain away easily.

Tulips grow best in fertile, airy soil. On heavy clay, some compost helps improve the structure. On light sandy soil, clay minerals can help retain moisture and nutrients.

Care

Tulips need little maintenance. You can add a little organic fertiliser when planting, but do not overdo it. Too much feeding often encourages extra foliage without improving the flowers.

Remove the spent flower after flowering. Leave the foliage undisturbed until it turns yellow naturally, as the bulb uses its leaves to store energy for the next growing season.

To keep the bulbs for another flowering season, lift them once the foliage has completely died back. Let them dry in an airy place and store them somewhere dry until autumn.

What happens if tulip bulbs stay in the ground?

Tulips can return for several years when left in the ground. However, flowering often becomes less abundant and the risk of disease increases. For the best results, it is therefore sensible to plant the bulbs in a different spot each year.
