For best results, plant them in autumn, preferably from October. If your soil is sandy, mix in some clay minerals at planting to improve structure. In heavy clay soil, add organic matter like compost to enhance drainage. Leave the foliage in place, even if untidy, as it provides energy via photosynthesis.
