While many plants are still dormant, its grey-green leaves are already pushing through the soil, followed by elegant white, bell-shaped flowers.

What always stands out to us about this species is its relatively broad leaves. They give the plant a slightly stronger appearance than the common snowdrop. The flowers themselves remain delicate. They hang gracefully downwards as if hiding from the cold, but anyone who takes a closer look will notice the distinctive green markings on the inner petals.

We like to plant snowdrops in places where you regularly walk during winter. Along a garden path, for example, or beneath a tree that provides shade during summer. At a time when very little else is flowering, these small blooms bring welcome life to the garden.

Where should I plant Galanthus elwesii?

Snowdrops are easy to grow. Give them a spot in partial shade or light shade and they usually establish themselves quickly. They thrive beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, where they receive plenty of sunlight in early spring before the leaves appear, while the soil stays moist for longer later in the season.

They prefer humus-rich soil, but they also grow well in many ordinary garden soils. As long as excess water can drain away during winter, snowdrops are surprisingly hardy.

Planting the bulbs

The bulbs can be planted from September onwards. We usually plant them at a depth of around 5 centimetres. There's no need to be overly precise. Snowdrops generally find their own way.

For a natural-looking display, we prefer not to plant them in straight rows. Instead, scatter small groups here and there. After a few years, it will look as though they have always been part of the garden.

Maintenance

Snowdrops require very little maintenance. The most important thing is to leave the foliage in place after flowering. It will naturally turn yellow before disappearing on its own.

Over time the clumps become larger. If they become overcrowded, you can lift and divide them after flowering before replanting them in smaller groups. This allows them to spread gradually throughout the garden.

Once you've planted snowdrops, you'll often notice that a few more appear every spring. That's exactly what makes them so special. They don't produce a spectacular display, but year after year they provide the first reassuring sign that spring is on its way.

From Our Own Organic Cultivation

When we had the opportunity to plant Galanthus elwesii, we didn't have to think twice. For us, snowdrops are among the very first signs of spring. The bulbs were planted on organically managed land last year, where they were able to grow under certified organic conditions.

As a result, we can now offer organically certified Galanthus elwesii.
