An organic botanical tulip mix for your spring border

Small tulips opening wide in sunshine, with yellow or blue-and-white centres: this botanical tulip mix brings plenty of colour without great height. You receive 210 organic tulip bulbs in six varieties, based on ‘Red Beauty’, Tulipa saxatilis and ‘Little Beauty’, with red ‘Zwanenburg’, bronze-yellow ‘Bronze Charm’ and a small group of 5 yellow woodland tulips, Tulipa sylvestris.

The pack costs €50 and has an individual retail value of €104.85. This is calculated by bulb count using the current unit price in our individual packs.

Which botanical tulips are in this mix?

Variety Number of bulbs Height Flowering period
Tulipa ‘Red Beauty’ 50 15 cm March – April
Tulipa saxatilis 50 15 cm March – April
Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’ 50 15 cm March – April
Tulipa praestans ‘Zwanenburg’ 30 30 cm April – May
Tulipa batalinii ‘Bronze Charm’ 25 25 cm April – May
Tulipa sylvestris 5 25 cm April – May

The quantities above are individual tulip bulbs. There are deliberately just five sylvestris bulbs, adding a small yellow accent among the other varieties.

Six varieties for a low spring border

‘Red Beauty’ has red flowers with a yellow centre. Tulipa saxatilis opens lilac with yellow, while ‘Little Beauty’ has a striking blue-and-white centre in a pink flower. These three grow to around 15 cm and suit the front of a border or a path edge.

Tulipa praestans ‘Zwanenburg’ grows slightly taller and can produce several red flowers per bulb. Tulipa batalinii ‘Bronze Charm’ has bronze-yellow flowers. The five woodland tulips add a looser, natural touch with yellow flowers on slender stems.

The early varieties flower in March and April, followed by ‘Zwanenburg’, ‘Bronze Charm’ and sylvestris in April and May. Flowering may overlap, but not every variety necessarily flowers together. The image is a collage of all six varieties.

How to plant this botanical tulip mix

Plant from October in sun or light partial shade, preferably in a sunny position for ‘Zwanenburg’. The soil must drain excess water well, especially during summer dormancy. Do not plant in frozen or waterlogged soil.

Planting depth and arrangement

Plant ‘Red Beauty’, saxatilis, ‘Little Beauty’ and ‘Bronze Charm’ about 7 cm deep; allow about 10 cm for ‘Zwanenburg’ and sylvestris. Adjust to bulb size: two to three times the bulb's height is a useful rule. Space them about 7–10 cm apart.

Plant in small groups to show the different colours clearly. Put the lowest tulips at the front, with ‘Zwanenburg’, ‘Bronze Charm’ and the woodland tulips a little further back. Pots and planters need drainage holes.

Care and naturalising

Let the foliage yellow before removing it. The leaves help the bulbs build reserves for the next season. If needed, apply a light organic feed in spring.

Botanical tulips can stay in the ground and spread gradually in a suitable position. Success varies by variety and location. Divide overcrowded groups during dormancy and replant in autumn.
