Organic White Ornamental Onion

Allium 'Cowanii', also known as white ornamental onion, is a perennial flowering bulb that comes back to life every spring. From the small bulb grow slender, grass-like leaves around 15 to 25 centimeters long. In late spring or early summer, a sturdy stem appears about 30 to 40 centimeters tall, topped with a beautiful spherical cluster of white flowers, around 8 centimeters wide.

Each flower has six petals and striking stamens, a delicate detail best seen up close. This ornamental onion looks stunning in borders, rock gardens, or flower beds and is a true magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A perfect choice for nature-inspired gardens and biodiversity lovers.

Is Allium 'Cowanii' the same as Allium neapolitanum?

Allium 'Cowanii' is a selected form of Allium neapolitanum, known for its stronger stems and more compact flower clusters. While closely related, 'Cowanii' grows in a slightly tidier and more upright form. Not all neapolitanum types are 'Cowanii', but they belong to the same botanical group.

How, where and when do I plant Allium 'Cowanii' bulbs?

Allium 'Cowanii' bulbs need a cold period. That’s why it's best to plant them in autumn, between October and January. The planting depth should be about 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb, and the spacing should also be 2 to 3 times its width. Allium 'Cowanii' grows best in full sun or light shade. For ideal growth and flowering, plant it in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil – preferably a chalky sandy soil.

Care

Let the flowers fully mature and form seed, allowing the plant to self-sow. If you'd like to propagate the bulbs, you can dig them up in July. Let them dry and store in a warm place until October, when they can be replanted. These bulbs will naturalize over time, so they can also be left in the ground over summer. For best results, apply organic fertilizer annually.

Origin

Allium 'Cowanii' originates from the mountainous regions of Turkey and Iran and even grows as far west as Portugal. It is native to these areas and thrives in their specific climate and soil conditions. From there, it has spread to other parts of the world, primarily as an ornamental plant valued for its decorative flowers.
