Organic pale blue prairie lily

Camassia cusickii, also known as prairie lily or camas, is a robust, graceful spring-flowering bulb with pale blue, star-shaped flowers. The flowers appear in loose racemes on sturdy stems around 70 to 80 cm tall. Their soft blue petals give the plant a natural, airy appearance in the border.

This camassia usually flowers in late spring, from May to June.

How, where and when should you plant Camassia cusickii bulbs?

Camassia bulbs need a cold period. Plant them between September and January, at a depth of two to three times the height of the bulb and spaced two to three times the bulb's width apart. Camassia prefers well-drained soil that stays moderately moist. It grows well in different soil types, including clay, loam and sandy soil. Avoid waterlogged ground, as this can cause the bulbs to rot.

Camassia cusickii grows best in sun or light shade. It also works well beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, flowering before the canopy has fully closed.

Care

Camassia is a very robust bulbous plant that naturalises well and needs little care. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulb can store enough energy for the following year.

Origin of Camassia cusickii

Camassia cusickii is native to North America, particularly the northwestern United States. It grows naturally in moist grassland and open mountain meadows.

Like other camassia species, it later became valued as an ornamental plant in Europe. Its soft blue colour, strong growth and natural appearance make it well suited to borders, naturalistic planting and naturalising.
