Fiery Red Canna

The Canna 'Red Dazzler' is a tropical, bee-friendly plant, also known as Indian shot. This canna blooms in August and September and stands out with its intense, fiery red flowers and strong summer presence. From the rhizome grow one or more sturdy, reed-like flower stems that rise above the foliage and reach a height of around 120 centimetres. The name ‘Canna’ comes from the Latin word for ‘reed’, making this plant suitable as a cut flower.

At the top of the flower stems, several flower buds develop with red flowers that open one after another. After flowering, round seed pods may form, which are also decorative. The rhizomes multiply well underground each year, often resulting in a fuller clump after just one season.

How, where and when should I plant canna rhizomes?

Starting indoors

Canna 'Red Dazzler' is not winter hardy, so the rhizomes can be started indoors from March. This gives the plant a head start, allowing the cannas to flower earlier. After the last frost (around mid-May), the plants can be moved outdoors, or earlier in mild weather, but be cautious of night frost. In that case, bring them indoors overnight.

Planting outdoors

If you prefer to plant the canna rhizomes after the risk of frost has passed, do so after mid-May. From that point on, the rhizomes can safely be planted outdoors and will usually flower around 60–90 days later. Plant the canna rhizome with the new shoots facing upwards, 2 to 3 centimetres below the soil surface, and allow about 40 cm spacing between plants. Planting can continue until June.

Position

Cannas prefer a sunny position in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Canna 'Red Dazzler' grows to about 70 cm tall and has strong, reed-like stems with medium-sized flowers. This usually means no additional support is needed. Place the plant in a sheltered spot if possible. For container planting, a pot with a minimum width of 40 cm is recommended to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly during summer.

Care

Keep the soil around Canna 'Red Dazzler' consistently slightly moist. Soil that becomes too dry can affect growth and flowering. The plant blooms for approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the rhizome can store energy for the following season. In autumn, cut the withered plant back to ground level. Rhizomes planted in the ground can be protected against light frost with a layer of leaves. In severe frost, the rhizomes should be lifted and stored frost-free and dry. An advantage of lifting the rhizomes is that they can be divided immediately.

Feed the plant several times a year for best results. Cannas grow quickly and require plenty of nutrients.

Propagation

In autumn, the rhizomes continue to grow well. Do not lift them too early; just before the first frost is usually the best time. Divide the rhizomes preferably in spring, when they are replanted. This helps prevent damage and reduces the risk of fungal problems during winter storage. We recommend dividing Canna 'Red Dazzler' every 2 to 3 years.

Edible

The rhizomes of Canna indica contain a high amount of starch. Their flavour is often compared to sweet potato, and the leaves develop a lemon-like taste when grilled or steamed.
