Deep Velvet-Red Dahlia ‘Buran’

Dahlia ‘Buran’ is a deep red dahlia with full, rounded flowers and a velvety appearance. The blooms reach about 10 cm in diameter and are carried on sturdy, dark stems. The plant grows to a height of approximately 90–100 cm.

The foliage is fresh green to slightly darker in tone, creating a strong contrast with the deep red flowers. Thanks to its strong growth and sturdy stems, this dahlia is suitable for both borders and cutting gardens.

‘Buran’ blooms abundantly from summer until the first frost. Regularly removing spent flowers encourages continuous flowering.

Planting Instructions for Dahlia ‘Buran’

Starting Indoors

Dahlias are not frost-hardy. The tubers can be started indoors from March onwards to give them a head start. After the risk of frost has passed (around mid-May), the plants can be moved outdoors. If frost threatens, they should be protected or brought inside.

Planting Outdoors

If planting directly outdoors, wait until after the last frost, usually around mid-May. The tubers can then be planted safely and will flower approximately 60–90 days later.

Plant the tuber with the old stem facing upwards, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Space the plants about 50 cm apart.

Planting is possible until the end of June.

Location

Dahlias prefer a sunny position with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, ideally slightly calcareous.
The Dahlia ‘Buran’ grows to about one meter tall and generally does not require staking.

For container planting, use a pot with a minimum diameter of 40 cm to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.

Pinching Dahlias

Pinching encourages bushier growth and more abundant flowering. Dahlias should be pinched once they have reached an active growth stage and have developed at least 2–4 pairs of leaves.

Using clean, sharp scissors, cut just above a leaf node. Any buds below the cut can be removed so the plant can focus its energy on producing side shoots.

Care of Dahlia ‘Buran’

Keep the soil evenly moist, as drought can negatively affect growth and flowering.
Remove spent flowers regularly. The dahlia will continue flowering until the first frost. After flowering, cut the plant back to ground level. Tubers left in the ground should be protected with leaves or lifted and stored frost-free in colder regions.

Feed the plant several times during the growing season, as dahlias are vigorous growers and benefit from regular feeding.

Propagation

In autumn, the tubers continue to develop. The best time to lift them is just before the first frost. The tubers can be divided immediately or in spring. Dividing in spring makes it easier to identify new growth points.

Edible

All parts of the Dahlia ‘Buran’ are edible. The tuber has a mild, carrot-like flavor, and the flowers can be used to garnish salads or flavor water.

Origin

Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were originally cultivated as a food source. Once their ornamental value was discovered, they became one of the most diverse and widely grown ornamental plant groups in the world.
