Single-flowered Dahlia ‘Full of Nature’

The Dahlia ‘Full of Nature’ produces elegant, single-flowered blooms with an open centre that attracts bees and butterflies. The petals are soft lilac to pale purple, fading gently toward a light-coloured centre. The plant grows to around 60 cm tall and features dark green foliage with sturdy, dark stems.

‘Full of Nature’ blooms generously for up to 100 days. By regularly removing spent flowers, the plant continues to produce new blooms, creating a long-lasting and lively display well into late summer.

The tubers of ‘Full of Nature’ are grown from organic heel cuttings, resulting in strong, healthy plants that produce an abundance of flowers.

How, where and when to plant organic dahlia tubers

Starting indoors

Dahlias are not frost-hardy, so tubers can be started indoors from March onwards. This gives the plants a head start and encourages earlier flowering. Once the danger of frost has passed, usually after mid-May, the plants can be moved outdoors. If frost threatens, they should be brought back inside temporarily.

Planting outdoors

If you prefer to plant directly in the garden, wait until after the last frost. From mid-May onward, tubers can safely be planted and will begin flowering approximately 60 to 90 days later.

Plant the tuber with the old stem facing upward, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Leave around 50 cm of space between each plant.

The planting season runs until June.

Location

Dahlias prefer a sunny location with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, ideally slightly sandy or calcareous. The Dahlia ‘Full of Nature’ grows to a medium height and generally does not require staking. When grown in containers, use a pot with a diameter of at least 40 cm to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.

Pinching (topping)

Pinching helps promote bushier growth and more abundant flowering. This is done by removing the growing tip once the plant has reached a certain height, usually after several sets of leaves have formed.

Using clean, sharp pruners, cut just above a leaf node. Removing developing buds below the cut allows the plant to focus its energy on producing side shoots, resulting in a fuller, more floriferous plant.

Care of the Dahlia ‘Full of Nature’

Keep the soil consistently moist, as dry conditions can negatively affect growth and flowering. During the flowering period, regularly remove faded blooms to encourage continued flowering. After flowering has finished, allow the plant to die back naturally before cutting it down. This prevents moisture from collecting in the hollow stems and causing rot.

Feeding

Dahlias are fast-growing plants and benefit from regular feeding throughout the growing season. Providing balanced nutrition will result in stronger growth and more abundant flowering.

Winter care

In mild climates, tubers left in the ground should be protected with a thick layer of mulch. In colder regions, it is best to lift the tubers and store them in a dry, frost-free place. Lifting also allows the tubers to be divided each year.

Propagation

Dahlia tubers mature fully in autumn. The best time to lift them is just before the first frost. They can be divided immediately or stored and divided in spring. Dividing in spring makes it easier to see the new growth points.

Edible

All parts of the Dahlia ‘Full of Nature’ are edible. The tuber has a mild, carrot-like flavour, and the flowers can be used as an edible garnish or to add a subtle aroma to water.

Origin

Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were once cultivated as a food crop. Once their ornamental value was discovered, they became one of the most diverse and widely grown ornamental plant groups in the world.
