Red Daylily 'Autumn Red'

Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red' is a daylily with character. Its deep, warm red hues instantly enhance the garden's ambiance from summer onward. It's a strong and reliable plant that continues to perform well year after year.

Like every daylily, 'Autumn Red' only displays its flowers for a single day. But you'll hardly notice it, as it continues to produce new buds. As a result, the plant remains covered in fresh blooms for weeks, and often even months. Thanks to its open flower shape, bees and other insects are also easy to find.

The flowers are large and striking, about 10 to 12 centimeters wide, and contrast beautifully with the crisp, narrow leaves. At about 60 to 70 centimeters tall, this daylily has a bit more presence than the shorter varieties and looks stunning in borders and larger plantings.

Planting instructions for Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red'

Planting in the open ground

Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red' is completely winter-hardy and can be planted almost year-round, as long as the ground isn't frozen. The best time to plant is spring or autumn, so the roots can establish well.

Plant the root ball with the green shoots just above the ground, leaving about 40 to 50 centimeters between plants. Water generously after planting.

In pots

'Autumn Red' also thrives in large pots. Ideally, choose a pot with a minimum diameter of 35 to 40 centimeters and ensure adequate drainage. Regular watering is important in pots, especially during hot and dry periods.

Location

This daylily grows best in a sunny to partially shaded location. It blooms most profusely in the sun, and the red flowers are at their best. The soil should be fertile and well-drained; it tolerates prolonged wet soil less well.

Caring for Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red'

Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red' is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial. Keep the soil slightly moist, especially during dry summers. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plant well-groomed and allows it to continue to invest its energy in new blooms.

In autumn, the leaves die back. These can be cut back or left until spring. In spring, the plant will naturally sprout fresh, vigorous new growth.

Hemerocallis and nutrition

A dose of organic fertilizer or compost in spring supports healthy growth and abundant flowering. Excessive fertilization is unnecessary; Hemerocallis is a naturally robust garden plant.

Winter hardiness

Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red' is completely hardy and can overwinter in the ground without protection. It is also hardy in pots, provided the pot doesn't freeze completely for extended periods.

Propagation

After a few years, Hemerocallis 'Autumn Red' can be divided. This is best done in spring or after flowering in autumn. Dividing the plant keeps it vigorous and ensures it continues to bloom profusely.
