Yellow-orange Daylily 'Beppie' (Hemerocallis)
Hemerocallis 'Beppie' is a warm, friendly daylily with a bright yellow base and an orange to reddish accent in the center of the flower. It is an easy plant to combine, yet it immediately adds colour to the garden—especially when planted in small groups.
Like all daylilies, each flower blooms for just one day. That may sound short, but in practice it is hardly noticeable. 'Beppie' continuously produces new buds, resulting in weeks of flowering from June through August. Thanks to the open flowers, bees and other insects can easily find their way to it.
The flowers are a good size—around 10 to 12 centimetres across—and stand out nicely against the narrow, green foliage. With a height of approximately 60 to 70 centimetres, 'Beppie' fits perfectly in the front or middle of the border.
Planting instructions for Hemerocallis 'Beppie'
Planting in the ground
Hemerocallis 'Beppie' is fully winter hardy and can be planted almost year-round, as long as the ground is not frozen. Spring and autumn are the best planting periods, allowing the roots to establish well.
Plant the root ball with the green shoots just above soil level and allow about 40 to 50 centimetres between plants. Water generously after planting.
In pots
'Beppie' also grows well in large containers. Choose a pot with a minimum diameter of 35 to 40 centimetres and ensure good drainage. When grown in pots, regular watering is important, especially during warm and dry periods.
Position
This daylily grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position. Flowering is most abundant in full sun, where the warm yellow-orange flower colours show best. The soil should be fertile and well-drained.
Caring for Hemerocallis 'Beppie'
Hemerocallis 'Beppie' is a strong, low-maintenance perennial. Keep the soil slightly moist during prolonged dry spells. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plant looking tidy and supports continued flowering.
In autumn, the foliage dies back. It can be cut back then or left in place until spring. In spring, the plant will naturally produce fresh, vigorous growth.
Hemerocallis and feeding
An application of organic fertiliser or compost in spring supports healthy growth and abundant flowering. Heavy feeding is not required; Hemerocallis is naturally a robust garden plant.
Winter hardiness
Hemerocallis 'Beppie' is fully winter hardy and can overwinter outdoors without protection. It is also winter hardy in containers, provided the pot does not freeze solid for extended periods.
Propagation
After a few years, Hemerocallis 'Beppie' can be divided. This is best done in spring or after flowering in autumn. Dividing the plant helps keep it vigorous and free-flowering.
