Red and Yellow Daylily 'Frans Hals' (Hemerocallis)
Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals' is a true classic among daylilies. Its striking yellow and red flowers instantly add color to the garden and have proven to be a reliable choice for all kinds of borders over many years.
Like all daylilies, each flower blooms for just one day. That may sound brief, but in practice it goes largely unnoticed. The plant continuously produces new buds, resulting in weeks of abundant flowering from June through August. Thanks to its open flowers, bees and other beneficial insects can easily find it.
The flowers are generously sized—about 10 to 12 centimeters across—and contrast beautifully with the narrow, green foliage. Reaching a height of around 60 to 70 centimeters, 'Frans Hals' fits perfectly in the front or middle of a border.
Planting instructions for Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals'
Planting in the ground
Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals' is fully winter hardy and can be planted almost year-round, provided the ground is not frozen. Spring and autumn are the ideal planting times, allowing the roots to establish well.
Plant the root ball with the green shoots just above soil level and leave approximately 40 to 50 centimeters between plants. Water thoroughly after planting.
In pots
'Frans Hals' also performs well in large containers. Choose a pot with a minimum diameter of 35 to 40 centimeters and ensure good drainage. Regular watering is important when grown in pots, especially during warm and dry periods.
Position
This daylily grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position. Flowering is most abundant in full sun, where the contrasting yellow and red blooms are at their most striking. The soil should be fertile and well-drained.
Caring for Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals'
Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals' is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial. Keep the soil slightly moist during prolonged dry spells. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plant looking neat and encourages continued flowering.
In autumn, the foliage dies back. It can be cut back then or left in place until spring, when the plant will naturally produce fresh, vigorous growth.
Hemerocallis and feeding
An application of organic fertilizer or compost in spring supports healthy growth and abundant flowering. Heavy feeding is unnecessary, as Hemerocallis is naturally a robust garden plant.
Winter hardiness
Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals' is fully winter hardy and can overwinter outdoors without protection. It is also winter hardy in containers, provided the pot does not freeze solid for extended periods.
Propagation
After a few years, Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals' can be divided. This is best done in spring or after flowering in autumn. Dividing the plant helps maintain vigor and abundant blooming.
