Red-purple Daylily 'Purple Waters'
Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters' is a daylily with deep red-purple flowers and a striking yellow-green throat. It is the kind of plant that doesn’t shout for attention, yet immediately adds atmosphere to the garden—especially when planted in small groups in the border.
As with all daylilies, each flower blooms for just one day. That may sound brief, but in practice it goes largely unnoticed, as 'Purple Waters' continues to produce new buds. This results in weeks of flowering, usually from June through August. The open flower shape also makes it easy for bees and other insects to visit.
The flowers are a generous size (around 10 to 12 cm across) and contrast nicely with the narrow, green foliage. Reaching a height of about 70 to 80 cm, 'Purple Waters' fits particularly well in the middle of the border, among other perennials and ornamental grasses.
Planting instructions for Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters'
Planting in the ground
Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters' is fully winter hardy and can be planted almost year-round, as long as the soil is not frozen. Spring and autumn are ideal, allowing the plant to establish at a relaxed pace.
Plant the root ball with the green shoots just above soil level and allow approximately 40 to 50 cm between plants. Water well after planting.
In pots
'Purple Waters' also performs well in large containers. Choose a pot with a minimum diameter of 35 to 40 cm and ensure good drainage. Regular watering is important when grown in pots, especially during warm and dry periods.
Position
This daylily grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position. Flowering is most abundant in full sun, but the plant also performs reliably in light shade. The soil should be fertile and well-drained.
Caring for Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters'
Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters' is a strong, low-maintenance perennial. During prolonged dry spells, occasional extra watering is appreciated. Spent flowers can be removed for a tidy look, but this is not strictly necessary.
In autumn, the foliage dies back. It can be cut back then or left in place until spring, when the plant will naturally produce fresh new growth.
Hemerocallis and feeding
An application of organic fertilizer or compost in spring is usually sufficient to support healthy growth and flowering. Heavy feeding is not required; Hemerocallis is naturally an easy garden plant.
Winter hardiness
Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters' is fully winter hardy and can overwinter outdoors without protection. It is also winter hardy in containers, provided the pot does not freeze solid for extended periods.
Propagation
After a few years, Hemerocallis 'Purple Waters' can be divided. This is best done in spring or after flowering in autumn. Dividing the plant helps maintain vigor and abundant flowering.
