Double-flowering Pink Peony
Paeonia lactiflora 'Sarah Bernhardt' has been a firm garden favourite for many years. Many people know it as a peony rose, although it is not actually a rose and therefore has no thorns. What stands out immediately are the large, fully double flowers in soft pink shades. They are packed with petals and release a wonderful fragrance. This peony is named after the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt. Flowering usually takes place in late spring, sometimes extending into early summer.
Even outside the flowering period, it is a pleasure to have in the garden. The fresh green foliage remains attractive for a long time and gives borders a lush appearance. Reaching a height of around 70 to 90 centimetres, 'Sarah Bernhardt' stands firmly among other perennials. It is a strong peony that returns reliably every year and, with a little care, becomes more impressive over time.
How, where and when should I plant peonies?
When planting, make sure the new shoots (small red buds) remain just above soil level. Do not plant too deeply, as this can prevent flowering. Peonies also dislike being moved, so choose a good permanent spot from the start. Over the years, flowering will become increasingly abundant.
Peonies prefer partial shade, although they can be planted in full sun if you mainly want to use them as cut flowers. In full sun, they produce more blooms but flower for a shorter period. Plant them in nutrient-rich soil, preferably slightly acidic. If your soil is naturally heavy or clay-based, adding organic matter such as compost will improve soil structure.
Care
We recommend supporting the plant or cutting a few flower stems for the vase during flowering. This reduces the weight of the plant and helps it remain upright. Always leave at least two flower stems in place to ensure good flowering the following year. Cut the plant back to ground level in October and apply organic fertiliser annually.
Dividing peonies
Peony rootstocks can be easily divided using a clean, sharp knife or saw. Cut between the new growth buds. However, it is advisable to leave the plant undisturbed for at least five years before dividing. Peonies can react poorly to being lifted and may struggle to flower the following year.
Origin of the peony
The peony originally comes from China, where its roots were traditionally used for their fever-reducing and blood-staunching properties.
Buying peonies
When purchasing, you will receive strong rootstocks that are approximately five years old. While flowering may occur in the first year, it is more common for peonies to flower reliably from the second year onwards.
