Red/White Botanical Tulips

The name Tulipa 'Tiny Timo' suggests a modest tulip, but during its bloom, it surprisingly attracts a lot of attention. Its flowers combine warm red hues with a white heart. As soon as the sun breaks through, the flowers open completely, creating the characteristic star shape for which botanical tulips are so beloved.

With a height of approximately 10 to 15 centimeters, 'Tiny Timo' remains beautifully compact. This makes it ideal for the front of a border, between stones in a rock garden, or in a low pot on a table. Despite its small size, it provides a striking amount of color early in spring.

What we love about this tulip is that the flowers show a different face throughout the day. On cloudy days, they remain more closed, while on sunny days they open completely, revealing their white heart.

How, where, and when do I plant Tulipa 'Tiny Timo' flower bulbs?

Plant 'Tiny Timo' bulbs in autumn, from September to January. Place the bulb with the pointed end facing up in the ground. A planting depth of about 7 centimeters is usually sufficient for this small botanical tulip. Maintain a distance of approximately 7 centimeters between bulbs.

Choose a sunny spot or a location with light partial shade. This tulip prefers well-drained soil. Especially in summer, when the bulb is dormant, the soil should not remain too wet.

If you have heavy clay soil, mix in some compost or coarse sand. This allows excess water to drain more easily. 'Tiny Timo' often thrives quickly in sandy soil.

Care

'Tiny Timo' requires little maintenance. If necessary, provide some organic fertilizer in early spring, as soon as the first shoots appear above ground.

After flowering, let the leaves yellow naturally. This might look a bit untidy for a while, but it's important for the bulb. Through its leaves, the bulb stores new energy for the following year.

After a few years, the bulbs may sometimes end up lying a bit higher in the ground. In that case, replant them at the correct depth in autumn. Otherwise, you can mostly leave this tulip alone.

Why choose 'Tiny Timo'?

Not every tulip reliably returns year after year, but botanical tulips often do. In a sunny, not-too-wet spot, 'Tiny Timo' can reappear every spring. Over time, small clusters often form, providing increasingly more color.

Because this tulip blooms early, it is also interesting for bees and other early pollinators. Once the flowers are open, the yellow heart is easily accessible to insects searching for food.
