Organic flamed lily-flowered tulips

Organic Tulipa 'Fire Wings' is a lily-flowered tulip that immediately catches the eye. Its slender, pointed petals gracefully curve outwards as the flower opens, giving it an elegant appearance. What truly makes this variety stand out are its warm colours. Deep red and bright orange blend seamlessly together, while a fine yellow edge highlights each petal, making the blooms look as if they are glowing with flames.

The flowers grow to approximately 10 cm across and are held on sturdy stems reaching around 50 cm in height. The blue-green, lance-shaped foliage provides a calm backdrop that allows the fiery blooms to stand out even more. 'Fire Wings' flowers in late spring and is an excellent choice for borders, containers and striking cut flower arrangements.

How, where and when should I plant tulip bulbs?

Tulip bulbs need a cold period to flower properly. Plant them from October onwards so they remain in the ground throughout winter. Plant each bulb at a depth of two to three times its own height and leave a spacing of two to three times the bulb's width between bulbs.

Plant Tulipa 'Fire Wings' in full sun or partial shade. They prefer fertile, nutrient-rich soil, ideally loam. If you have sandy soil, mix clay minerals into the planting hole. Heavy clay soils can be improved with organic matter to increase drainage. Make sure the soil remains well-drained, as excessive moisture around the bulbs may cause them to rot.

Care

You can mix an organic fertiliser into the soil when planting. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertiliser encourages excessive leaf growth and weaker flowers.

Remove faded flowers by cutting them from the top of the stem, allowing the bulb to store energy instead of producing seeds. Leave the foliage in place while it remains green, as it provides energy through photosynthesis for next year's flowers. The leaves will naturally die back, usually around July.

To encourage strong blooms the following year, carefully lift the bulbs after the foliage has completely died back and hang them in a warm, well-ventilated shed to dry. Remove excess soil while leaving the outer skin intact. Replant the bulbs in autumn following the planting instructions above.

What happens if tulip bulbs are left in the ground?

Organic tulip bulbs can continue flowering for several years if left in the ground. However, flower quality gradually declines and the risk of diseases such as tulip fire increases. For the healthiest plants, replant your tulips in a different location each year.
