Organic Yellow Daffodil – Narcissus 'Carlton'

The Narcissus 'Carlton' is a large-cupped daffodil with a vibrant, golden-yellow hue. The flowers measure approximately 12–14 cm in diameter and emit a pleasant, sweet fragrance. Each sturdy stem bears a single bloom, and the plant reaches a height of about 40–45 cm. 'Carlton' is one of the most popular daffodils for cut flowers and is excellent for naturalizing in gardens.

This variety blooms in mid-spring, typically in April, and is ideal for beds, borders, lawns, and containers. It pairs well with other spring bloomers like tulips and grape hyacinths.

How, where, and when to plant daffodil bulbs?

Plant 'Carlton' bulbs from September to December. The planting depth should be 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb (approximately 10–15 cm), with a spacing of 10–15 cm between bulbs. Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, humus-rich soil. For heavy soils, it's advisable to incorporate sand or compost to improve drainage.

Daffodil bulbs are toxic and therefore avoided by rodents like voles. They can serve as a natural protection for other, more vulnerable flower bulbs.

Care

Apply organic fertilizer at planting time. Remove spent flowers, but allow the foliage to die back completely before cutting it off, so the bulb can store energy for the next year. 'Carlton' is a robust variety that naturalizes well and reliably returns each year. An annual application of organic fertilizer in spring promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Propagation

For propagation, bulbs can be dug up in summer after the foliage has died back, dried, and stored in a cool, dry place. They can be replanted in autumn. Small offset bulbs should be planted separately and provided with organic fertilizer to encourage their growth.

History of 'Carlton'

The 'Carlton' daffodil was introduced in 1927 and has since become one of the most widely cultivated large-cupped daffodils. It is known for its reliability, vigorous blooms, and suitability for both garden and cut flower use.
