Organic giant ornamental onion
The Allium 'Gladiator' is a popular ornamental onion with high decorative value. The name Gladiator refers to the bold, powerful presence of this plant. With a flower stem that can grow up to 120 cm tall, it is an ideal perennial for the back of garden borders. The large, spherical flower head consists of hundreds of lilac, star-shaped florets rich in nectar. This makes Allium 'Gladiator' especially attractive to bees and other pollinators. Excellent as a cut flower and for drying. The seed heads can be left standing as winter decoration or used in dried floral arrangements.
This plant closely resembles Allium 'Globemaster', but its flower is slightly smaller, about 15 cm in diameter. The broad, grey-green leaves often wither during blooming—so it's best to plant them among perennials to disguise the foliage. Combine Allium 'Gladiator' with plants like Salvia nemorosa to provide bees with even more nectar-rich options.
How, where and when do I plant Allium 'Gladiator' flower bulbs?
A Gladiator flower bulb needs a cold period. Therefore, plant it in the ground in the autumn from October to January. The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the flower bulb itself and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the flower bulb itself. Plant it in full sun or partial shade in a nutritious, water-permeable, preferably calcareous sandy soil.
Care
After flowering, cut off the faded flowers and as soon as the foliage has died, the flower bulb can be dug up to divide the flower bulb. This usually multiplies. The flower bulbs are then stored in the shed until September and are then replanted in the ground. The flower bulbs can also remain in the ground. These will naturalise and also come up again by themselves.
Provide organic nutrients immediately upon planting and in spring before flowering for optimal results!
