Yellow Semi-Cactus Dahlia ‘Bilbao’
Yellow is said to lift the spirit – and this striking large-flowered dahlia certainly does just that. The Dahlia ‘Bilbao’ is a semi-cactus dahlia with impressively large blooms. Compared to the white semi-cactus Dahlia ‘My Love’, the flowers of ‘Bilbao’ are noticeably larger. For this reason, it is often classified among the dinnerplate dahlias.
The bright yellow flowers can reach a diameter of up to 25 centimetres and consist of many narrow, pointed petals. Because the flowers are fully double, they are less suitable for pollinators, but ideal as cut flowers for vases. The plant has fresh green foliage, sturdy stems, and reaches a height of around 80 centimetres.
Combination tip: Combine ‘Bilbao’ with the Dahlia ‘Akita’ for a striking colour contrast.
Planting instructions for the Dahlia ‘Bilbao’
Starting indoors
Dahlias are not frost-hardy. From March onwards, the tubers can be started indoors to encourage earlier flowering. Plants can be moved outside after the last frost (around mid-May), or earlier in mild weather, but be cautious of night frost.
Planting outdoors
The tubers can be planted outdoors after the last frost (from mid-May), about 2 to 3 centimetres deep, with a spacing of approximately 50 centimetres. Flowering begins 60 to 90 days later. Planting can continue until the end of June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny, sheltered location in nutrient-rich, well-drained, calcareous soil. Due to their large flowers, support may be required. We recommend planting the ‘Lavender Perfection’ variety only in a large, well-drained container.
Topping dahlias
Topping, or pinching encourages compact, bushy growth. Pinch the plant when it has developed two to four pairs of leaves. Cut just above a leaf node using clean, sharp secateurs. This stimulates the formation of side shoots and results in more flowers.
Care of the Dahlia ‘Bilbao’
Keep the soil evenly moist; drought can negatively affect growth and flowering. Remove spent blooms to encourage new growth. After the first frost, the plant can be cut back to ground level. Protect tubers in the soil with leaves during light frost or store them frost-free during severe frost. Tubers can be divided annually.
For optimal growth, dahlias require regular feeding. We recommend feeding every six weeks.
Propagation
Propagate the tubers by dividing them in autumn or spring. Divide in spring when the growth points are visible, making it easier to identify the best places to divide.
Edible
Organic dahlias are completely edible. The tubers have a root-like flavour, and the flowers can be used in salads or to decorate and flavour water.
Origin of the Dahlia
Dahlias originate from Mexico. They were originally cultivated as edible tubers but later became popular ornamental plants due to their striking beauty.
