White and Purple Dahlia 'Eveline'
The Dahlia 'Eveline' is a decorative white and purple dahlia with elegant, softly coloured blooms. The plant has green foliage and grows to a height of around 80 cm. The flowers reach approximately 9 cm in diameter and resemble those of the Dahlia 'Wittem'. ‘Eveline’ grows slightly taller but produces slightly smaller flowers.
Flowering begins in July when started early and can continue until the first frost. Removing spent flowers encourages the plant to keep producing new blooms.
How, where and when to plant
Starting indoors
Dahlias are not frost-hardy. The tubers can be started indoors from March onwards. This gives the plants a head start and earlier flowering. After the last frost (around mid-May), the plants can be moved outside. If frost threatens, they should be brought indoors again.
Planting outdoors
If planting directly outside, wait until the risk of frost has passed, usually around mid-May. The tubers can then be planted safely and will flower approximately 60 to 90 days later.
Plant the tuber with the old stem facing upward, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Space plants about 50 cm apart.
Planting is possible until the end of June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny position with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, ideally slightly calcareous.
The Dahlia 'Eveline' grows to around 80 cm tall and produces medium-sized flowers, meaning it usually does not require staking.
For container planting, use a pot with a minimum diameter of 40 cm to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.
Pinching
Pinching encourages bushier growth and more abundant flowering. Dahlias should be pinched once they have reached an active growth stage. It is recommended to leave at least two to four pairs of leaves.
Using clean, sharp scissors, cut just above a leaf node. Removing any buds below the cut helps the plant focus its energy on producing side shoots.
Care
Keep the soil evenly moist at all times. Dry conditions can negatively affect growth and flowering.
Remove spent blooms regularly. The dahlia will continue flowering until the first frost. After flowering, cut the plant back to ground level. Tubers left in the ground should be protected with mulch or lifted and stored frost-free.
Feed the plant several times during the growing season, as dahlias are heavy feeders.
Propagation
In autumn, the tubers continue to develop. The best time to lift them is just before the first frost. The tubers can be divided immediately or in spring. Dividing in spring makes it easier to see where new growth points are forming.
Edible
All parts of the Dahlia 'Eveline' are edible. The tuber has a mild, carrot-like flavour, and the flowers can be used to decorate salads or flavour water.
Origin
Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were originally cultivated as a food source. Once their ornamental value was discovered, they became one of the most diverse and popular ornamental plant groups in the world.
