Soft apricot-pink decorative Dahlia 'Giovanna'

Soft, romantic and elegant: the Dahlia 'Giovanna' is a decorative dahlia with large, perfectly double flowers in a refined apricot to blush-pink colour palette. The petals show a subtle gradient from warm peach in the centre to light cream-pink at the outer edges, giving the flower a luxurious and harmonious appearance.

The blooms are beautifully rounded and fully double. The slightly inward-curving petals add extra depth and a soft, almost velvety texture. With a flower diameter of approximately 12 to 15 cm, ‘Giovanna’ is generous yet elegant – ideal for both garden borders and floral arrangements.

As a cut flower, ‘Giovanna’ is highly valued: strong stems, excellent vase life, and a colour that combines beautifully with cream, dusty pink, pastel yellow and soft green tones. In the garden, she brings calm and refinement and fits perfectly into romantic and natural planting schemes.

Combination tip: Combine ‘Giovanna’ with white or cream dahlias for a soft, dreamy look, or with light purple and pastel pink tones for an elegant colour palette. Also stunning when paired with ornamental grasses.

Planting instructions for Dahlia 'Giovanna'

Starting indoors

Dahlias are not frost hardy. From March onwards, tubers can be started indoors for earlier flowering. Plant the tuber in a pot with airy potting compost, place it in a bright frost-free location, and water sparingly until growth begins. After the last frost (around May 15), the plant can be moved outside, or earlier if frost is no longer expected.

Planting outdoors

Plant the tubers outdoors once the risk of night frost has passed (from mid-May). Place the tuber about 2 to 3 cm below the soil surface and keep a planting distance of approximately 50 cm. Flowering usually begins 60 to 90 days after planting and continues until the first frost. Planting is possible until June.

Position

Choose a sunny, sheltered location in fertile, well-drained soil. In heavy clay soil, adding compost and coarse organic material helps improve drainage. Due to the abundant flowering, support may be beneficial in windy locations.

Pinching dahlias

Pinching encourages the plant to develop more side shoots and ultimately more flowers. Pinch when the plant has developed 2 to 4 pairs of leaves. Cut with sharp, clean pruning shears just above a leaf node. This promotes more compact growth and more cut flowers.

Care of Dahlia 'Giovanna'

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during warm and dry periods. Avoid extreme fluctuations between wet and dry conditions. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new buds.

For abundant flowering, we recommend feeding every 6 weeks with an (organic) flowering fertiliser. Avoid fertilisers high in nitrogen, as these promote leaf growth rather than flowers.

After the first frost, cut the plant back to just above ground level. In wet or cold winters, it is advisable to lift the tubers and store them frost-free. In mild winters, they may remain in the ground with a dry protective mulch layer.

Propagation

‘Giovanna’ can be easily propagated by dividing the tubers. This is best done in spring when growth points are visible. Ensure each division contains at least one healthy growth point.

Edible

Organic dahlias are fully edible. The petals are suitable as decorative garnishes or in salads. The tubers have a mild, root-like flavour. Only use plants that you are certain have been organically grown.

Origin of the Dahlia

Dahlias originate from Mexico. Originally cultivated for their edible tubers, they have become beloved ornamental plants worldwide due to their enormous diversity in flower forms and colours.
