Apricot-Orange Decorative Dahlia ‘Orange King’

Soft, warm and refined: Dahlia ‘Orange King’ is a decorative dahlia with elegant apricot to peach-coloured blooms. Rather than a bold, bright orange, this variety displays a subtle colour gradient — from soft salmon-orange outer petals to a slightly deeper coral centre — creating a luxurious and romantic appearance.

The fully double flowers are beautifully rounded and well structured. Lightly curled petals add depth and softness to the bloom. With a flower diameter of approximately 12–15 cm, ‘Orange King’ is not a dinnerplate dahlia, but an ideal size for floral arrangements: eye-catching yet easy to combine.

As a cut flower, ‘Orange King’ stands out thanks to its strong stems, good vase life and versatile colour. It pairs beautifully with cream, blush pink, rust and deep burgundy tones. In the garden, it adds warmth without overpowering neighbouring plants.

Combination tip: Combine ‘Orange King’ with cream or white dahlias for a soft, harmonious look, or create an elegant contrast with deep burgundy varieties. Also very attractive when combined with ornamental grasses.

Planting instructions for Dahlia ‘Orange King’

Starting indoors

Dahlias are not frost hardy. From March onwards, tubers can be started indoors to encourage earlier flowering. Plant the tuber in a pot with loose compost, place in a bright, frost-free location and water sparingly until growth starts. After the risk of frost has passed (around mid-May), plants can be moved outside.

Planting outdoors

Plant tubers outdoors from mid-May once all risk of frost has passed. Plant the tuber approximately 2–3 cm below the soil surface, allowing around 50 cm spacing between plants. Flowering usually begins 60–90 days after planting and continues until the first frost.

Position

Dahlia ‘Orange King’ prefers a sunny, sheltered position in fertile, well-drained soil. In heavier soils, improve drainage by adding compost. Due to its height and flower production, staking may be beneficial.

Pinching dahlias

Pinching promotes a bushier plant with more flowering stems. Pinch out the growing tip once the plant has developed 2–4 pairs of leaves, cutting just above a leaf node with clean, sharp secateurs.

Care for Dahlia ‘Orange King’

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during warm and dry periods. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering. Feed every 6 weeks with a suitable flowering fertiliser for best results.

After the first frost, cut plants back to just above ground level. In cold or wet winters, lift the tubers and store them frost-free until spring.

Propagation

‘Orange King’ is easy to propagate by dividing the tubers. Divide in spring when the growth points are visible, ensuring each section has at least one healthy shoot.

Edible

Organically grown dahlias are fully edible. The petals can be used as an edible decoration, while the tubers have a mild, earthy flavour.

Origin of the Dahlia

Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were originally cultivated for their edible tubers before becoming popular ornamental plants worldwide.
