Organically grown Red Hot Poker

The Kniphofia 'Alcazar' is a striking perennial with fiery flower spikes that bloom in mid-summer. The torch-like flowers explain its common names: torch lily or red hot poker. This variety is loved for its warm colour blend, typically ranging from orange to red with yellow accents, and its bold, architectural look in the border.

The sturdy flower stems reach around one metre tall. In the first year, a plant often produces one flower spike, but it becomes wider and more floriferous each season, forming a strong clump with multiple flowering stems.

The rocket-like flower spikes make excellent cut flowers, and the many nectar-rich florets are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

How, where and when do I plant Kniphofia roots in the ground?

Kniphofia rhizomes are winter hardy and can be planted from early spring onwards. Plant them so that the green growth point sits just above the soil surface. For the best effect, plant in groups of 3, or in larger drifts of up to 15 plants.
The preferred position is full sun or light partial shade. Choose a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil (ideally sandy or loamy) and avoid wet feet, especially in winter.

Care of the Kniphofia

Remove spent flower stems by cutting them off low at the base, and leave the foliage in place. The leaves often stay green well into winter; remove any yellowed leaves the following spring. Feed once a year for the best growth and flowering.

We recommend Bio Kultura for organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers!
