Organic bicolour Triumph tulip

Organic Tulipa 'Judith Leyster' is an elegant Triumph tulip that immediately stands out thanks to its beautiful colour transition. The flowers open in soft creamy yellow to white shades with a delicate pink edge. As the bloom matures, this edge gradually deepens to a rich carmine red, giving the tulip a slightly different appearance every day.

Growing to around 50 to 55 cm tall with sturdy stems, this tulip is an excellent choice for borders, containers and cut flower gardens. It flowers from April into early May and combines beautifully with both soft pastel shades and more vibrant spring-flowering bulbs.

How, where and when do I plant tulip bulbs?

Tulip bulbs require a cold period to flower well. They are best planted in autumn from October onwards, allowing them to remain in the ground throughout winter. Plant each bulb at a depth of two to three times its own height and leave a spacing of two to three times the bulb's width between each bulb.

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Tulips thrive in fertile, nutrient-rich soil, preferably loam. If you have sandy soil, mix some clay minerals into the planting hole. For heavy clay soils, add organic matter to improve drainage. Well-drained soil is essential, as excessive moisture around the bulbs can cause them to rot.

Care

When planting, you can enrich the soil with an organic fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertiliser encourages excessive leaf growth at the expense of strong flowers.

Once the flowers have faded, remove only the spent flower heads so the bulb stores its energy instead of producing seeds. Leave the foliage in place, as it provides energy through photosynthesis for next year's flowers. Allow the leaves to die back naturally, which usually happens around July.

To encourage large blooms again the following year, lift the bulbs from the garden once the foliage has completely died back and store them in a warm, dry shed. Handle the bulbs carefully to avoid damage, remove excess soil while keeping the outer skin intact, and allow them to dry in a well-ventilated place.

In autumn, the bulbs can be replanted following the planting instructions above.

What happens if tulip bulbs are left in the ground?

If the organic bulbs of 'Judith Leyster' are left in the ground, they can continue flowering for several years. However, the flower quality gradually declines and the risk of diseases such as tulip fire increases considerably. To keep your tulips healthy, it is best to plant them in a different location each year.
