Organic red and yellow Triumph tulip

Organic Tulipa 'Abu Hassan' is hard to overlook. The flowers are dark mahogany red with a broad golden-yellow edge. In sunlight, the colours look even warmer, giving the flower an almost fiery appearance.

This Triumph tulip grows around 45 to 50 cm tall on sturdy stems. It is suitable for borders and also makes an excellent cut flower. It flowers from April to early May. We particularly like it alongside yellow or orange tulips, although it is just as striking on its own.

How, where and when should you plant tulip bulbs?

Tulip bulbs need a cold period to flower well. Plant them in autumn, preferably from October. Plant at a depth of approximately two to three times the bulb's height. The base of the bulb will usually sit about 10 cm below soil level. Place the bulbs with the pointed end upwards and leave around 10 to 15 cm between them.

Choose sun or light partial shade. Tulips grow best in fertile, well-drained soil. If you have sandy soil, mix some clay minerals and organic matter into the planting hole. On heavy clay, compost or other organic matter helps excess water drain away more easily. Too much moisture around the bulbs can cause rot.

Care

You can mix a small amount of organic fertiliser into the soil when planting. Avoid overfeeding, as this may encourage excessive foliage and less sturdy flower stems.

After flowering, remove only the spent flower at the top of the stem. This prevents the plant from using energy to produce seed. Leave the stem and leaves to die back completely. The green foliage allows the bulb to gather new energy for the following growing season. By June or July, the leaves have usually turned fully yellow and died back.

If you want the largest possible flowers each year, lift the bulbs once the foliage has died back. Gently remove excess soil, leaving the bulb's outer skin intact. Store the bulbs in a dry, warm and well-ventilated place over summer.

Replant them in autumn at the same depth and spacing.

What happens if tulip bulbs stay in the ground?

If the organic 'Abu Hassan' bulbs remain in the ground, they may flower again in subsequent years. Over time, however, the flowers may become smaller or less numerous. The risk of soil-borne disease also increases when the same planting site is used for a long time. Preferably avoid planting tulips in exactly the same spot every year.
