Pink/yellow botanical tulips
When the flowers of Tulipa humilis 'Persian Pearl' open, you immediately see why this small tulip is so beloved. The petals are deep magenta pink and contrast brightly with the golden yellow heart. On a sunny day, the flowers open completely and almost look like small stars among the fresh spring green.
This botanical tulip stays low and grows to about 10 to 15 centimeters tall. This makes it well-suited for places where large tulips might look too coarse. Think of a rock garden, the edge of a border, a shallow bowl, or a pot on the patio.
What we like about 'Persian Pearl' is that despite its small size, it immediately stands out. Especially when multiple flowers open simultaneously, a cheerful play of pink, yellow, and green colors emerges. Often, multiple flowers appear from a single bulb.
How, where, and when do I plant tulip bulbs of Tulipa 'Persian Pearl'?
Plant the bulbs of 'Persian Pearl' in the autumn, from September to January. Place the bulb with the pointed end facing up in the ground. A planting depth of about 7 centimeters is usually sufficient for this small botanical tulip. Also, maintain approximately 7 centimeters distance between the bulbs.
Choose a sunny spot or a spot in light partial shade. This tulip prefers well-draining soil. Especially in summer, when the bulb is dormant, the soil should not remain too wet.
If you have heavy clay soil, mix some compost or coarse sand into the soil. This allows excess water to drain more easily. 'Persian Pearl' often feels at home quickly in sandy soil.
Care
'Persian Pearl' requires little maintenance. Optionally, give some organic fertilizer in early spring, as soon as the first shoots emerge above ground.
Allow the leaves to yellow naturally after flowering. This might look a bit untidy for a while, but it is important for the bulb. Through its leaves, the bulb stores new energy for the next year.
After a few years, the bulbs may sometimes rise a little higher in the ground. If this happens, replant them at the correct depth in the autumn. Otherwise, you can largely leave this tulip alone.
Why choose 'Persian Pearl'?
Not every tulip returns well for many years, but botanical tulips often do. In a sunny, not too wet spot, 'Persian Pearl' can reappear every spring. Over time, small clumps often form.
Because this tulip blooms early, it is also attractive to bees and other early pollinators. As soon as the sun shines, the flowers open wide and the yellow heart is easily accessible.
