Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Organic Bulbs

What is the difference between organic and conventional bulbs?

Organic bulbs are grown without chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers. They thrive in healthy, living soil and are naturally made resistant to diseases. Conventional (regular) bulbs are often intensively treated or sprayed with substances that are harmful to the soil, bees, and other insects.

How can I identify an organic bulb?

All organic products must come with an organic certificate. In the Netherlands, this certificate is issued by Skal Bio-Control with the well-known NL-BIO-01 seal. In Belgium, for example, it is BE-BIO-01. It is also important to note that all organic products must include the word “BIO” in the product title – this is called organic labeling. Please pay close attention, as many companies sell a few organic products, leading you to assume that their entire range is organic.

Why are organic bulbs better for insects?

Because they are not treated with harmful chemicals, organic bulbs are safe for bees and other beneficial insects. Many varieties, such as crocuses, botanical tulips and ornamental alliums, are also an important food source in early spring.

Aren't all bulbs organic?

No, not all bulbs are grown naturally. In conventional bulb cultivation, many harmful pesticides are generally used.

Are organic bulbs better?

All bulb varieties selected for organic cultivation are robust and disease-resistant. Organic bulbs come from healthy soil, have more vitality, and perform better in subsequent years.

Do all your organic bulbs come from the Netherlands?

Yes, we work with 9 organically certified growers who all cultivate in the Netherlands and hold the NL-BIO-01 Dutch Agriculture certificate from Skal.

What does the indicated bulb size, such as 11/+, mean?

11/+ indicates that the bulb has a circumference of 11 centimeters or more. The bulb is measured at 11 centimeters around, which is the standard size for most tulip bulbs.

Why are some varieties temporarily sold out?

Because we work with seasonal cultivation, the supply is limited and variable. Some varieties sell out quickly or are harvested only once a year. This makes them especially unique and ensures that our assortment changes slightly from year to year.

Are organic bulbs more sustainable for my garden?

Yes, absolutely. Because they come from healthy soil and are not reliant on artificial additives, they are ideal for a garden that functions in natural balance. They promote soil life, attract beneficial insects, and contribute to biodiversity.

Planting Organic Bulbs, Tubers, and Rhizomes

Can organic bulbs be planted in pots?

Yes, organic bulbs are excellent for pots, containers, or even balcony boxes. Just make sure to use a pot with good drainage and sufficient depth, depending on the type. A layer of gravel at the bottom helps to drain excess water.

Do I need to replant organic bulbs every year?

Many organic bulbs are perennial and will return on their own as long as they are planted in a suitable spot. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after blooming so that the bulb can store energy for the next year. Some varieties even naturalize and become a bit more vigorous each year.

When is the best time to plant organic bulbs?

It depends on the type of bulb:

  • Spring bloomers (such as tulips, daffodils, crocuses): plant in autumn (September – December).
  • Summer bloomers (such as dahlias, gladioli): plant in spring (March – June).
  • Autumn bloomers (such as autumn-flowering crocuses): plant in summer (July – September).

In all product descriptions, you will find at the bottom of the page exactly when and how a bulb should be planted.

What quality do you deliver?

All of our products come with a Skal bio certificate and are inspected by the BKD (bulb inspection service) or Nak-Tuinbouw. Every product is hand-selected prior to shipping to ensure top quality. Even when you visit us at our market booth, you can choose the largest bulb from the collection yourself. We do not use pre-packaged bulbs so that we can better monitor the quality. It can happen that bulbs, which have been packaged long in advance, begin to rot in the bag – and we want to avoid that at all costs.

Yes, we guarantee that the colors and varieties we offer, as shown in the photos and product descriptions, match the final result.

Our philosophy is that what you put in the ground should contribute to a better planet; Besides the fact that flowers are a beauty to the eye, they contribute to a habitat for insects such as butterflies and bees. In this way we can contribute to a healthy eco-system on our planet with sufficient bio-diversity.
