Organic blue fescue
Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ is a strong, evergreen blue fescue that immediately stands out for its fresh, steel-blue colour. The name glauca refers to the blue-grey tone with a subtle, matte sheen that is so characteristic of the foliage. The narrow leaves grow in dense tufts, providing a calm base and year-round structure in the garden.
The foliage is fine, firm and slightly arching, giving the plant a fresh and modern appearance. Thanks to its compact growth, ‘Elijah Blue’ keeps its shape well and is ideally suited to borders, rock gardens and containers.
In early summer, fine flower stems appear just above the foliage. These flower heads later turn straw yellow, creating a subtle contrast with the blue leaves.
Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ is low-maintenance, drought tolerant and also offers shelter to insects that like to hide among the dense tufts.
How, where and when to plant blue fescue
Festuca is a perennial plant that can be planted almost year-round. The root balls can be planted immediately upon arrival. Plant the root ball so that the top is level with the soil surface.
Plant it in a sunny position in well-drained, rather poor soil. Sandy or stony soils are ideal. Soils that are too wet or overly fertile can result in looser growth and loss of colour.
Plant Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ along the edge of borders, in groups or in containers. It combines beautifully with flowering perennials such as salvia, lavender or low-growing sedum varieties.
Care
Water only during prolonged dry periods, especially when newly planted. Festuca does not like wet feet.
In spring, old foliage can be gently combed out or lightly trimmed to make room for fresh new growth. Avoid cutting the plant back too hard.
Fertilising is usually not necessary. On very poor soils, a light (organic) feed can be applied in spring.
Propagation
After a few years, the clumps can be divided. Dig up the plant, split the root ball into several sections and replant them. This keeps the plant vigorous and compact.
Use in the garden
Blue fescue is widely used as a ground cover, edging plant or accent in modern and natural-style gardens.
‘Elijah Blue’ also performs very well in pots and containers on terraces or balconies, thanks to its lasting colour and compact growth.
