Organic Dinner Plate Dahlia 'White Perfection'

Dahlia 'White Perfection' is a dinnerplate dahlia, known for its impressively large double blooms, 25 to 30 cm wide. The flowers are white with pointed petals and bloom for weeks, making them ideal for flower arrangements and bouquets.

The plant has green leaves and grows to about 1 meter tall, with multiple sturdy, light green flower stems. A single tuber can produce 10 to 15 flowers per year over a period of roughly 100 days, blooming from summer until the first frost.

Except for the color, 'White Perfection' has the same flowers as the coffee-colored 'Cafe au Lait' and the pink 'Lavender Perfection' dahlias. Bloemoloog recommends combining these varieties for a striking display.

How, where, and when to plant 'White Perfection'

Starting indoors

'White Perfection' dahlias are not winter-hardy. From March onwards, the tubers can be started indoors to encourage earlier flowering. Plants can be moved outdoors after the last frosts in May (around May 15), or earlier if the weather is warm, but take care to avoid night frost.

Planting outdoors

Tubers can be planted outdoors after the last frost, about 3–5 cm deep, with approximately 50 cm between plants. Flowering begins 60 to 90 days later. Planting can continue until the end of June.

Location

Dahlias prefer a sunny, sheltered spot in nutrient-rich, well-drained, slightly calcareous sandy soil. Because of their large flowers, staking may sometimes be necessary. Planting in pots is only recommended if the container is large and well-draining.

Topping Dahlias

Pinching (topping) dahlias encourages compact, bushy growth. Pinch the plant once it has developed two to four pairs of leaves. Cut just above a leaf node with sharp, clean pruning shears. This encourages side branching, resulting in more flowers.

Caring for 'White Perfection'

Keep the soil consistently moist, as drying out can affect growth and flowering. Remove spent flowers to encourage new growth. Just before the first frost, cut the plant back to ground level. Protect tubers in the ground with mulch during light frost, or lift and store them frost-free during severe frost. Tubers can be divided annually.

For optimal growth, feed dahlias regularly, preferably every six weeks.

Propagation

Propagate tubers by dividing them in autumn or spring. In spring, divide when the growing points are visible so the best division points are easy to identify.

Edible

Organic dahlias are edible. The tubers have a mild, carrot-like flavor, and the flowers can be used in salads or to decorate and flavor water.

Origin of the Dahlia

Dahlias are native to Mexico. They were originally cultivated as edible tubers for livestock, but their ornamental beauty has made them one of the most diverse plant species.
