Organic Dinnerplate Dahlia 'Lavender Perfection'
The Dahlia 'Lavender Perfection' is a dinnerplate dahlia, known for its impressively large double blooms, 25 to 30 cm wide. The flowers are pink with pointed petals. These beautiful blooms last for weeks and are often used in flower arrangements and bouquets due to their size and elegance.
The plant has green leaves and grows to about 1 meter tall, with multiple sturdy, light green flower stems. A single tuber can produce 10 to 15 flowers per year over a period of roughly 100 days, blooming from summer until the first frost, creating a sea of flowers late in the season.
Except for the color, 'Lavender Perfection' has the same flowers as the coffee-colored 'Cafe au Lait' and the white 'White Perfection' dahlia. Bloemoloog therefore recommends combining these varieties.
How, where, and when to plant the 'Lavender Perfection' Dahlia?
Starting indoors
'Lavender Perfection' dahlias are not winter-hardy. From March, tubers can be started indoors to encourage earlier flowering. Plants can be moved outdoors after the Ice Saints (May 15), or earlier in good weather, but watch out for night frost.
Planting outdoors
Tubers can be planted outdoors after the last frost (up to May 15), about 2–3 cm deep, with roughly 50 cm spacing between tubers. Flowering begins 60–90 days later. Planting can continue until the end of June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny, sheltered spot in nutrient-rich, well-drained, slightly calcareous sandy soil. Due to the large flowers, staking may sometimes be necessary. We do not recommend planting 'Lavender Perfection' in a pot unless it is a large, well-drained container.
Topping dahlias
Topping, or pinching dahlias encourages compact, bushy growth. Pinch the plant once it has developed 2–4 pairs of leaves. Cut just above a leaf node with sharp, clean pruning shears. This encourages side branching, resulting in more flowers.
Caring for the 'Lavender Perfection' Dahlia
Keep the soil moist; drying out can affect growth and flowering. Remove spent flowers to encourage new growth. After the first frost, the plant can be cut back to the ground. Protect tubers in the ground with leaves during light frost or store them frost-free during severe frost. Tubers can be divided annually.
For optimal growth, dahlias require regular feeding. We recommend feeding every six weeks.
Propagation
Propagate tubers by dividing them in autumn or spring. Divide in spring when the growing points are visible so the best division points are easy to identify.
Edible
Organic dahlias are fully edible. The tubers have a carrot-like flavor, and the flowers can be used in salads or to decorate and flavor water.
Origin of the Dahlia
Dahlias are native to Mexico. They were first cultivated as edible tubers for livestock, but their beauty as ornamentals has made them one of the most diverse plant species.
