Organic one-leaf onion

Allium unifolium is native to North America and is also called American garlic in Dutch. Another name is one-leaf onion. This relatively low-growing ornamental onion flowers in May and June with soft pink to lilac-pink blooms. The flower stems reach around 30 to 50 cm tall. Loose umbels about 5 to 8 cm across form at the top, made up of small star-shaped flowers. The narrow, grey-green leaves often begin to turn yellow while the flowers are still in full bloom.

The flower heads are less dense and rounded than those of many ornamental onions. Their looser shape allows the individual flowers to remain clearly visible. Plant several together along a border or among low-growing perennials. This species also works well in a rock garden. The flowers attract bees and bumblebees, which can easily reach the nectar and pollen.

Why is Allium unifolium called one-leaf onion?

The name unifolium literally means 'one-leaved'. This is not always accurate, as the plant may produce two or three leaves. The Dutch name American garlic refers to its native range. Like garlic and common onions, this ornamental onion belongs to the genus Allium.

How, where and when should you plant Allium unifolium bulbs?

The best planting time is autumn, from September to December. Plant the bulbs around 5 to 8 cm deep and about 10 cm apart. They need winter cold to develop well. In spring, the leaves appear first, followed by the flower stems.

Choose sun or light partial shade. Good drainage is especially important. This ornamental onion generally grows well in sandy soil, but loam is also suitable as long as water does not collect around the bulbs. Prolonged wet conditions are particularly harmful in winter. Neutral to slightly alkaline soil is suitable.

Care

Once planted, Allium unifolium needs little attention. Allow the leaves to die back naturally after flowering, giving the bulb time to store nutrients for the following spring. Leave the spent flower heads if you want the plant to set seed.

The bulbs can stay in the ground all year. In a suitable spot, they return each spring and may slowly spread. After a few years, you can divide the clumps if needed. Lift the bulbs once the foliage has completely died back, let them dry and replant them in autumn. A small amount of organic feed in spring is usually enough.

Origin

One-leaf onion grows naturally in the western United States, mainly in California and Oregon. It grows in open places where the soil is moist in spring and dries out in summer. This explains its preference for well-drained conditions in the garden. From North America, Allium unifolium found its way into European gardens, where it is mainly grown for its pink flowers.
