Organic fringed tulip: 'Lingerie'
Tulipa 'Lingerie' is a distinctive Crispa tulip with soft pink flowers and finely fringed petal edges. These edges are especially striking on sunny days. From a distance, the flowers look almost white, while closer inspection reveals subtle pink and cream tones.
We find this one of the easiest tulips to combine with other plants. Its gentle colours suit both white and pink spring flowers, creating a soft effect in the border. It also looks lovely in a planter.
At around 35 cm tall, 'Lingerie' stays fairly compact. Its sturdy stems hold the flowers well and make this tulip suitable for cutting too.
How, where and when should you plant tulip bulbs?
Plant tulip bulbs in autumn, preferably from October. The bulbs need winter cold to grow well in spring. In mild autumn weather, you can wait a little longer; planting is possible as long as the ground is not frozen.
Plant the bulbs around 10 cm deep and about 15 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upwards. Gently firm the soil afterwards.
Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot. Tulips prefer fertile, well-drained soil. If the ground becomes wet easily, improve drainage with compost or some coarser material. Wet bulbs rot more readily, particularly in a mild winter.
Care
You can add a little organic fertiliser when planting. Use it sparingly, as tulips do not need heavy feeding. Excess nutrients mostly produce extra foliage rather than better flowers.
Cut off spent flowers once they lose their appeal. Leave the foliage until it turns yellow and dry naturally. The bulb uses the leaves to take back nutrients for the following season.
If you want to store the bulbs, lift them only after the foliage has died back. Let them dry in an airy, dry place and replant them in autumn.
What happens if tulip bulbs stay in the ground?
Tulips may return for another year, but flowering usually becomes less abundant. The risk of disease also increases when tulips stay in the same spot for years. For the best results, plant them in a different part of the garden each year.
