Organic Drumsticks
The striking Allium sphaerocephalon is also known as the 'drumstick' due to its compact flower head. It’s also called 'round-headed garlic' because its oval flowers resemble a bullet. It blooms from late spring into summer, and even before the buds open, the plant has high ornamental value. The flowering period lasts about 4 weeks, and even as a cut flower in a vase, it blooms for a long time. As the flower emerges from its sheath, it is initially green, then gradually turns magenta from the top downward as it matures.
Drumsticks have strong, upright flower stems reaching 70 to 100 centimeters tall, with 2 to 6 grass-green, hollow, tubular leaves at the base, each about 1 to 4 millimeters in diameter. These leaves dry out quickly, even during flowering, which means the plant takes up little space and combines beautifully with other ornamental onions or early-flowering perennials. The flower head is approximately 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter. Unlike other alliums, the individual florets are bell-shaped rather than star-shaped.
Drumsticks for Bees
The stamens protrude far from the petals, making them highly accessible to pollinators. The drumstick is one of the most bee-friendly bulbous plants available.
Edible Flowers
Every part of the 'sphaerocephalon' is edible, with a taste reminiscent of garlic.
How, Where, and When to Plant Drumstick Bulbs
Drumstick bulbs need a cold period. Plant them in the ground between October and January. The planting depth should be 2 to 3 times the bulb’s height, and the spacing 2 to 3 times the bulb’s width. They thrive best in full sun or partial shade in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, preferably calcareous sandy soil.
Care for Drumsticks
Allow the flowers to fully bloom and form seeds to encourage natural self-seeding. Bulbs can be lifted in July for propagation. Dry them and store them in a warm place until replanting in October. Drumsticks naturalize well and can also remain in the soil through summer. For best results, apply organic fertilizer annually.
Origin of the 'Sphaerocephalon'
Allium sphaerocephalon was first described around 1753. It belongs to the Alliaceae family and is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The name 'sphaerocephalon' means 'spherical head', derived from the Greek 'sphaira (σφαῖρα)' meaning “sphere” and 'kephalē (κεφαλή)' meaning “head”—a reference to the plant’s round flower shape.
