Organic white flowering botanical crocus

The Crocus chrysanthus 'Ard Schenk' is an early-flowering botanical crocus with pure white flowers and a striking yellow center. This graceful crocus grows to about 8 to 10 centimeters tall and opens its flowers to about 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter in sunny weather. Each corm can produce 2 to 3 flowers, so even small clusters create a rich flowering effect. The narrow, grass-like leaves with a silvery central stripe appear at the same time as or shortly after flowering and later grow to about 15 to 20 cm tall. The leaves die back naturally in spring.

The 'Ard Schenk' crocus is one of the first to bloom in spring, usually in February and March. It's a favorite with bees and other insects searching for nectar after the winter. Thanks to its fresh white color and early blooms, it's a real eye-catcher and a valuable plant for biodiversity. The Florilogist therefore recommends planting this variety liberally in gardens and pots.

How, where and when do I plant crocus corms?

Crocus corms need a cold dormant period. Therefore, plant them in the fall, from September to December. Plant them two to three times the corm's height, and space them two to three times the corm's width. Plant 100-120 corms per m². When planting in pots, ensure good drainage to prevent rot.

The ideal location is full sun or light partial shade. Use well-drained, nutrient-rich, and calcareous sandy or loamy soil. The 'Ard Schenk' is particularly suitable for naturalizing in lawns, borders, or under deciduous trees and shrubs. In pots, this crocus also makes a great top layer in a lasagna planting with flower bulbs. Combine it with blue scilla or other crocuses for a beautiful color contrast.

Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral.

Care

The Crocus chrysanthus 'Ard Schenk' is a vigorous naturalizer and requires little care. It's important to leave the foliage after flowering until it has completely yellowed and died back. This allows the tuber to absorb sufficient energy for the following year. Only prune the foliage when it has completely withered. For continued healthy growth, it's helpful to feed it with organic fertilizer annually.

After flowering, crocuses form new corms on top of the old ones. These can sometimes emerge above the soil. Plant these corms back at the correct depth.

Propagation

For propagation, the tubers can be dug up in early summer (June/July). Let them dry in a warm, dry place (such as a shed), and replant them from September onwards for flowering the following spring.

Origin of the crocus

The Crocus chrysanthus is native to southeastern Europe, particularly the Balkans and Turkey. The cultivar 'Ard Schenk' is a cultivated selection named after the famous Dutch speed skater Ard Schenk because of its "ice-white" appearance.

Particulars

A crocus grows from a tuberous plant and returns every year if properly cared for.
