Bronze Pompon Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’
The Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’ is a popular pompon dahlia with bronze-coloured flowers measuring approximately 7 cm in diameter. The blooms consist of many tightly packed petals, forming a neat, spherical shape. The plant has green foliage and reaches a height of around one metre. Its strong, upright stems make it very suitable for cutting.
The tubers of ‘Cornel Bronze’ are grown from carefully selected stock, ensuring strong and healthy plants. This results in an abundant display of flowers from July until the first frost.
Planting Instructions for Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’
Indoor Pre-growth
Dahlias are not frost-hardy. The tubers can be started indoors from March to encourage earlier growth and flowering. After the danger of frost has passed (around mid-May), the plants can be moved outdoors. If frost threatens, they should be protected or brought back inside.
Planting Outdoors
If planting directly outdoors, wait until after the last frost, usually around mid-May. From this point, the tubers can be planted safely and will flower approximately 60 to 90 days later.
Plant the tuber with the old stem facing upwards, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Space plants approximately 50 cm apart.
Planting is possible until the end of June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny position with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, ideally slightly calcareous.
The Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’ grows to about one metre tall and generally does not require staking.
For container planting, use a pot with a minimum diameter of 40 cm to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.
Pinching Dahlias
Pinching encourages bushier growth and more abundant flowering. Dahlias should be pinched once they are actively growing and have developed at least two to four pairs of leaves.
Using clean, sharp scissors, cut just above a leaf node. Any buds below the cut can be removed so the plant can direct its energy into producing new side shoots.
Care of Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’
Keep the soil evenly moist, as drought can negatively affect growth and flowering.
Remove spent blooms regularly. The dahlia will continue flowering until the first frost. After flowering, cut the plant back to ground level. Tubers left in the ground should be protected with mulch or lifted and stored frost-free in colder regions.
Feed the plant several times during the growing season, as dahlias are vigorous growers and benefit from regular feeding.
Propagation
In autumn, the tubers continue to develop. The best time to lift them is just before the first frost. The tubers can be divided immediately or in spring. Dividing in spring makes it easier to identify new growth points.
Edible
All parts of the Dahlia ‘Cornel Bronze’ are edible. The tuber has a mild, carrot-like flavour, and the flowers can be used to garnish salads or flavour water.
Origin
Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were originally cultivated as a food crop. Once their ornamental value was discovered, they became one of the most diverse and widely grown ornamental plant groups in the world.
