Single-flowered Dahlia ‘Ismay’
The Dahlia ‘Ismay’ is one of our absolute favourites, lovingly named after our daughter Ismay. This striking dahlia features bright pink, single flowers with an open centre that allows bees and other pollinators easy access. The blooms consist of multiple rows of petals, with the stamens remaining clearly visible throughout the flowering period.
The flowers grow to around 10 centimetres in diameter, and the plant reaches a height of approximately 70 centimetres. One of the most attractive features of this dahlia is its dark foliage, which creates a beautiful contrast with the vibrant flowers. An added bonus is that slugs tend to avoid the darker leaves.
How, where and when to plant organic dahlia tubers
Starting indoors
Dahlias are not frost-hardy, so tubers can be started indoors from March onwards. This gives the plants a head start and results in earlier flowering. Once the risk of frost has passed—usually after the Ice Saints around mid-May—the plants can be moved outside. If frost is expected, they should be brought indoors overnight.
Planting outdoors
If you prefer to plant directly in the garden, wait until after the last frost. From mid-May onward, tubers can be planted safely and will flower approximately 60 to 90 days later. Plant the tuber with the old stem facing upwards, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface, leaving roughly 50 cm between each plant.
The planting season continues until June.
Location
Dahlias thrive in a sunny spot with nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, preferably slightly sandy. The Dahlia ‘Ismay’ grows to a medium height and generally does not require staking. When grown in containers, use a pot with a diameter of at least 40 cm to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.
Pinching
Pinching encourages bushier growth and more abundant flowering. This is done by removing the growing tip once the plant has reached a certain height, usually after several sets of leaves have formed.
Using clean, sharp pruning shears, cut just above a leaf node. Removing developing buds below the cut allows the plant to direct its energy into producing strong side shoots, resulting in a fuller and more floriferous plant.
Care of the Dahlia ‘Ismay’
Keep the soil evenly moist, as drought stress can negatively affect growth and flowering. During the blooming period, remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous flowering. After flowering has finished, allow the plant to die back naturally so that moisture does not collect in the hollow stems and cause rot.
Feeding
Dahlias are vigorous growers and benefit from regular feeding throughout the growing season. A balanced fertiliser will support healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Winter care
In mild climates, tubers left in the ground can be protected with a thick layer of mulch. In colder regions, it is best to lift the tubers and store them in a frost-free, dry place. Lifting also allows the tubers to be divided for propagation.
Propagation
Dahlia tubers mature toward the end of the growing season. They should be lifted just before the first frost. Tubers can be divided immediately or in spring, when the growth points are more visible and easier to identify.
Edible
All parts of the Dahlia ‘Ismay’ are edible. The tuber has a mild, carrot-like flavour, and the flowers can be used to decorate salads or to infuse water with a subtle aroma.
Origin
Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were once cultivated as a food crop. Over time, their ornamental value was discovered, and they have since become one of the most diverse and beloved garden plants worldwide.
