Organic Decorative Dahlia 'Le Baron'
Dahlia 'Le Baron' is a double-flowered dahlia belonging to the decorative group. The plant grows to about 90 cm tall and produces large, full purple flowers measuring approximately 10 to 15 cm in diameter. It continues to flower from summer until well into autumn, providing months of color.
The 'Le Baron' is not considered bee-friendly due to its densely packed flowers. It is, however, very suitable as a cut flower and remains attractive in a vase for a long time.
Planting instructions for the 'Le Baron' Dahlia
Starting indoors
'Le Baron' dahlias are not winter-hardy. From March onwards, the tubers can be started indoors to encourage earlier flowering. Plants can be moved outdoors after the Ice Saints (around May 15), or earlier if weather conditions allow, but care should be taken to avoid night frost.
Planting outdoors
The tubers can be planted outdoors after the last frost, from mid-May onward, at a depth of about 3 to 5 cm and with approximately 50 cm spacing between plants. Flowering begins 60 to 90 days after planting. Planting is possible until the end of June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny, sheltered position in nutrient-rich, well-drained, slightly calcareous soil. Due to their large flowers, staking may be necessary. Planting in pots is possible, but only in large, well-drained containers.
Topping Dahlias
Pinching the growing tips encourages a bushier plant and more flowers. This can be done once the plant has developed two to four pairs of leaves. Cut just above a leaf node using clean, sharp tools.
Caring for the Dahlia 'Le Baron'
Keep the soil consistently moist, as drought can negatively affect growth and flowering. Remove faded flowers regularly to stimulate new blooms. Before the first frost, cut the plant back to ground level. Tubers can be protected in the ground with mulch or lifted and stored frost-free during winter. Tubers may be divided annually.
For optimal growth, regular feeding is recommended, approximately every six weeks.
Propagation
Propagation is done by dividing the tubers in spring or autumn. Spring division is preferred, as the growing points are clearly visible and easier to identify.
Edible
Organic dahlias are fully edible. The tubers have a mild, carrot-like flavor, and the flowers can be used as an edible garnish or to flavor drinks.
Origin of the Dahlia
Dahlias originate from Mexico, where they were originally cultivated for their edible tubers. Over time, their ornamental value led to the development of the many varieties known today.
