Organically grown broad-loaved snowdrop
Galanthus elwesii 'Polar Bear', also known as broad-leaved snowdrop, is a special variety that flowers very early in the year, often as early as February or March, and is therefore one of the first signs of the coming spring. This cultivar is loved for its large, round flowers and its striking inner petals with green markings.
The flowers hang gracefully downward and consist of six petals: three large, white outer ones and three shorter inner ones, which feature a dark green marking on the upper side and a small, inverted V-shaped spot on the underside. What makes this variety unique is that the flowers often face horizontally, making the beautiful interior clearly visible. This can be clearly seen in the images, which were taken by the discoverer and namesake of this variety, Patrick van den Berg. In sunny weather, the flowers open even further, revealing an almost rosette-like interior.
Location and soil
The 'Polar Bear' does well in partial shade to shade and prefers an airy, humus-rich and well-drained soil. It grows well under deciduous trees or shrubs, where it is protected from drying out in the summer. Both loam and sandy soil are suitable, as long as the soil does not become waterlogged.
When and how to plant?
Plant the bulbs in the autumn, between September and November, at a depth of approximately 5 cm and with a planting distance of 5 cm. Make sure the point is pointing upwards and water after planting so that the root growth gets going well. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering for healthy regrowth in the following season.
Care and propagation
This snowdrop naturalises well and multiplies via new bulbs. After a few years, you can carefully divide and plant out clumps to spread them. A layer of mulch can help keep the soil moist in dry winters, but do not cover the bulbs directly.
