Organic Crimson-red Peony
Paeonia 'Karl Rosenfield' is a classic red peony with a rich, deep colour. When the flower fully opens, the yellow stamens become visible in the centre, creating a striking contrast. The flowers are large, beautifully fragrant and very suitable for cutting and displaying in a vase.
It is also a strong and reliable plant that returns year after year. Give it a good position and some extra nourishment in spring (such as compost or dried manure), and you will notice that it becomes fuller and more floriferous with time.
How, where and when should I plant peonies?
When planting, it is important that the new shoots (the small red buds) remain just above soil level. Planting too deeply can result in poor or absent flowering. Peonies also dislike being moved, so choose a permanent position from the start. Once established, the plant will improve year after year.
'Karl Rosenfield' prefers a position in partial shade. For cut flowers, it can also be grown in full sun, where it often produces more blooms, although the flowering period may be shorter. The soil should be nutrient-rich and preferably slightly acidic. If your soil is naturally heavy or clay-based, adding organic matter such as compost will help improve its structure.
Care
Because of the large flowers, supporting the plant can be helpful, especially during periods of rain or wind. You can also cut a few flower stems for the vase during flowering. Always leave at least two flower stems in place so the plant can store enough energy for flowering the following year. Cut the plant back to ground level in October and apply organic fertiliser annually.
Dividing peonies
Peonies can be divided, but it is best not to do this too soon. Ideally, leave the plant undisturbed for at least five years before dividing. If you do decide to divide it, use a clean, sharp knife or saw and cut between the growth buds. Keep in mind that peonies sometimes need a year to recover after being lifted.
Buying peonies
When purchasing, you will receive strong rootstocks that are approximately five years old. This gives a good chance of flowering in the first year, although this will always depend on the planting location and growing conditions.
