Red and Yellow Botanical Tulips
When the flowers of Tulipa humilis 'Red Beauty' open, the striking colour contrast immediately catches the eye. The petals are deep red to crimson, while the bright yellow centre creates a beautiful contrast. On sunny days, the flowers open fully, revealing the characteristic star-shaped form that makes botanical tulips so popular.
This compact tulip grows to just 10 to 15 centimetres tall. Its low-growing habit makes it perfect for the front of borders, rock gardens or low patio containers. Its modest height allows the rich red flowers to stand out even more.
What we love most about 'Red Beauty' is how much colour it brings to the garden early in spring without taking up much space. Plant several bulbs together and they will create a vibrant splash of red and yellow among the fresh spring foliage.
How, where and when should I plant Tulipa 'Red Beauty' bulbs?
Plant 'Red Beauty' bulbs in autumn, from September through January. Place each bulb with the pointed end facing upwards. A planting depth of around 7 centimetres is ideal for this small botanical tulip. Leave approximately 7 centimetres between each bulb.
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade. This tulip prefers well-drained soil. During summer, when the bulb is dormant, the soil should not remain excessively wet.
If you have heavy clay soil, improve drainage by mixing in compost or coarse sand. This allows excess water to drain away more easily. On sandy soils, 'Red Beauty' usually establishes itself quickly.
Care
'Red Beauty' requires very little maintenance. If desired, apply a small amount of organic fertiliser in early spring as soon as the first shoots emerge.
Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Although it may look untidy for a while, this is essential for the bulb. The leaves store energy that will produce flowers again the following spring.
After several years, the bulbs may gradually work their way closer to the soil surface. If this happens, simply replant them at the correct depth in autumn. Otherwise, this tulip is happiest when left undisturbed.
Why choose 'Red Beauty'?
Not every tulip returns reliably year after year, but botanical tulips often do. In a sunny location with well-drained soil, 'Red Beauty' can reappear every spring and will gradually form attractive clumps over time.
Because it flowers early in the season, this tulip is also valuable for bees and other early pollinators. As soon as the sun comes out, the flowers open wide, making the bright yellow centre easily accessible.
