Organic botanical yellow tulips
Tulipa batalinii 'Yellow Jewel' is a charming botanical tulip with star-shaped, soft yellow flowers. This wild tulip is modest in size, but it more than makes up for it with its natural elegance. The flowers open widely in sunny weather, adding a subtle spring glow to rock gardens, borders, or pots.
The flower stem grows to about 15 to 25 centimeters tall and bears one flower per stem. The leaves are narrow, grayish-green to blue-green in color, and appear close to the ground. They often remain visible after flowering, adding to its ornamental value in spring. This species is known for its ability to naturalize and return year after year.
How, where, and when do I plant Tulipa 'Yellow Jewel' bulbs?
Like all tulips, Tulipa 'Yellow Jewel' needs a period of cold to bloom well. Plant the bulbs in the fall, preferably starting in September. When planting, plant them at a depth of two to three times the height of the bulb and at a planting distance of two to three times the width of the bulb.
'Yellow Jewel' prefers a sunny spot in well-drained soil. An airy, sandy soil with average moisture is ideal. Avoid wet, waterlogged conditions, as this can lead to bulb rot. In heavy clay soil, you can incorporate compost and a little sand to improve structure and drainage.
Care
In spring, give Tulipa 'Yellow Jewel' a light, organic fertilizer as soon as the first green tips appear. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering before removing it, this process nourishes the bulb for the following season. The foliage usually dies back quickly on its own.
If the bulbs emerge after a few years, replant them in the fall at the correct depth. This botanical tulip requires little maintenance and is ideally suited for natural gardens, where it will propagate modestly.
Origin
Tulipa batalinii 'Yellow Jewel' is a cultivated variety of the wild tulip Tulipa batalinii, native to mountainous regions of Central Asia such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. These regions are characterized by cold winters and well-drained soil, precisely the conditions that allow our gardens to thrive.
