Organic Pink Darwin-hybrid Tulips

Tulipa 'Pink Impression' is a pink Darwin hybrid tulip and a standout in any garden thanks to its enormous blooms. It towers above many other tulip varieties, and when the flower opens in the sun, the striking black star in the center becomes visible.

How and When to Plant a Tulip Bulb

Tulip bulbs need a cold period to grow and bloom well. That’s why it’s important to plant them in autumn, preferably starting from October. By planting before winter, the bulbs receive the cold they require for spring growth.

When planting, follow this simple rule of thumb: plant the bulb at a depth of approximately two to three times its own height. For spacing, keep two to three times the bulb’s width between each bulb.

Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot in the garden. Tulips prefer rich, well-drained soil. Loam is ideal. If your soil is sandy, mix in some clay minerals in the planting hole to improve structure. In heavy clay soil, add organic matter such as compost to help drainage. Good drainage is essential, as excessive moisture can cause bulb rot.

Care

Tulip bulbs require some extra care to bloom beautifully year after year. When planting, you may mix in a little organic fertilizer, but be sparing, too much nutrition encourages leafy growth at the expense of strong flowers. Once the blooms fade, it’s best to cut them off at the top of the stem. That way, the bulbs focus their energy inward rather than into seed production. Let the foliage remain, however untidy it may look, because it provides energy through photosynthesis to sustain the bulb for next season. Only remove the foliage when it has fully yellowed and died back, typically around July.

If you want the bulbs to produce large, healthy flowers the following year, gently lift them from the ground once the foliage has died back. Handle them carefully to avoid damage. Remove only loose soil and keep the outer tunic intact. Let the bulbs dry in a warm, well‑ventilated area such as a shed, before planting them again in autumn according to the same guidelines.

What if Tulip Bulbs Are Left in the Ground?

If an organic tulip bulb remains in the soil, it may flower for several years. However, quality tends to decline annually and the risk of diseases like Botrytis (fire) significantly increases. It’s therefore advisable to replant bulbs in different garden locations each year to avoid disease buildup and weakening.
