Organic Loddon Lily
The Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' is a cultivar of the Leucojum aestivum , also called 'summer snowflake' or 'loddon lily'. The 'Gravetye Giant' grows slightly larger. It grows to a height of about 30 to 40 centimeters and has 7 to 10 narrow leaves of about 25 centimeters long per flowerbulb. She can produce up to 5 lightly scented, bell-shaped flowers per flower stem and produces 2 to 3 flower stems per bulb.
According to many, its name 'summer snowflake' is misleading because it blooms in spring, April and May, but the bells of the Leucojum herald the summer, hence its name 'summer snowflake'. Unlike the snowdrop, the 6 petals are all the same length and have a green tip at the end of each petal.
The Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' is the longer version of the spring snowflake; Leucojum 'Vernum', she also has several flowers per flower stem.
How, where and when do I plant leucojum flower bulbs?
The leucojum flowerbulbs are planted in the ground from September. The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the height of the flowerbulb itself and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the flowerbulb itself.
In general, the Leucojum aestivum is a flexible plant in terms of location. It grows in borders, rock gardens, forest edges, in pots or even at the edge of the pond. It grows best in partial shade to full sun. It can tolerate some shade, especially during the warmer hours of the day.
Provide a well-drained soil that is rich in humus. The soil should not be too wet or soggy as this can cause the bulbs to rot. The Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' likes moderately humid conditions.
Care
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. Fertilize lightly with an organic fertilizer in the spring. This can promote the growth and flowering of the plant. We recommend Bio Kultura for organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers!
Remove wilted flowers to prevent seed formation and keep the plant looking tidy. After flowering, allow the foliage to gradually wilt before carefully removing it. The foliage plays a role in the nutrient absorption of the bulbs. This plant is generally hardy and can thrive in a variety of climates. However, it can be sensitive to hard frost, so in colder areas it may be necessary to protect the bulbs with a layer of mulch.
Propagation
Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' can be propagated by seed or dividing the bulbs. Division is best done in the fall, after the foliage has wilted.
Origin and history
The leucojum is a stinzenplant that has been growing wild in the Netherlands for centuries. They are common in the flood reaches of rivers. (View the map here of where it occurs in the wild in the Netherlands.) It is on the red list as vulnerable, which is why the Bloemoloog® is happy with the organic growers who grow it organically.
Originally it occurs from southern Europe to the Caucasus Mountains in Western Asia.
