Organic Red-Orange Darwin Hybrid Tulips

Bio Tulipa 'Ad Rem' is a spectacular Darwin Hybrid tulip with fiery red petals and a warm yellow edge. These large, egg-shaped flowers stand on sturdy stems of approximately 50 cm and are perfect for borders and as a cut flower. The colour becomes more intense as the flowering progresses and provides a powerful colour accent in the spring.

Plant in groups in borders or large pots for maximum impact. Combine with purple or soft yellow tulips for a classic warm palette. Although 'Ad Rem' is unscented, its impressive size and vibrant colour make it a real eye-catcher.

How, where and when do I plant a tulip bulb?

A tulip bulb is a flower bulb that needs a cold period. The flower bulb is best planted in the fall from October so that it is in the ground in the winter and gets that cold period. When planting, keep 2 to 3 times the height of the flower bulb itself and in terms of distance, keep 2 to 3 times the width of the flower bulb.

Plant the flower bulbs in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. They like nutritious, fertile soil, preferably loamy soil. If you have sandy soil, mix some clay minerals into the planting hole and in the case of clay soil, you can add some organic material to the planting hole for better drainage. Make sure that the soil remains well-drained, as too much moisture around the bulbs can lead to rotting.

Care

To feed the tulip bulbs, you can add organic fertilizers to the soil when planting. It is important not to overfeed the bulbs, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and weakened flowers.

The faded flowers are cut off at the top of the flower stem, so that the power goes to the flower bulb instead of to the seed. You leave the foliage on, because this ensures photosynthesis so that the flower bulb gathers power again for the following year. You let the foliage die off completely, so that the power goes back to the bulb. Around July, the leaf has completely died off.

In order for the tulip bulb to produce a large flower again, it must be dug up from the garden and hung in a warm shed. It is important to handle the bulbs carefully when digging them up and to ensure that they are not damaged. Remove excess soil and leave the outer shell of the bulb intact. Then hang the bulbs in a ventilated place to dry.

In the fall, the bulbs can be replanted in the ground. Follow the planting instructions above.

What if tulip bulbs are left in the ground?

If an organic tulip bulb remains in the ground, you can count on several years of flowering. However, the quality decreases annually and the chance of diseases such as fire is considerably greater. For this reason, choose different places in the garden each year to prevent diseases and weakening.
