Organic Blue-Violet Prairie Lily – Camassia quamash
The Camassia quamash, also known as the prairie lily and traditionally used by Native American tribes, is an elegant, naturalizing spring bloomer with deep violet-blue, star-shaped flowers. These flowers grow in vertical clusters on sturdy stems reaching 40–60 cm high. Its slender, graceful foliage adds an airy touch to any planting.
This Camassia blooms in May and June, often just after the tulips, making it a perfect transitional flower for spring borders. It is ideal for naturalistic plantings, such as borders, meadows, or the edges of a lawn.
How, where and when do I plant Camassia flower bulbs?
Plant the bulbs in fall, from September to January. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot with moist but well-draining soil. Camassia thrives in many soil types—clay, loam, or sand—as long as it doesn't stay waterlogged in winter. Plant at a depth of about 10–12 cm and space bulbs 10–15 cm apart.
This species needs a cold period to flower, like most spring bulbs. Camassia quamash is hardy, low-maintenance, and returns reliably year after year while slowly naturalizing.
Care
Camassia quamash is a strong perennial bulb that naturalizes well. It requires little attention once planted in the right spot. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for the next season.
Origin and cultural significance
Camassia quamash is native to western North America, where it grows in moist grasslands, open woods, and near streams. The tubers were traditionally harvested by Native American tribes such as the Nez Perce, Blackfoot, and Shoshone. When cooked, the roots are rich in starch and highly nutritious. The name "quamash" comes from the word used by the Nez Perce for the plant’s edible root.
Camassia was introduced to Europe in the 19th century through botanical expeditions by explorers like David Douglas. It has since become popular in gardens for its natural charm and vibrant spring color.
