Organic Orange Canna

The Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' is a tropical bee-friendly plant that is also known as 'Indian flower reed'. This plant blooms in August and September and stands out because of its colorful leaves and vibrant flowers. From the tuber grow one or more sturdy, reed-like flower stems that protrude above the canopy and can grow up to about a meter high. This is why the plant gets its name 'Canna', which is Latin for 'reed', and this also makes it very suitable as a cut flower.

At the top of the flower stems, multiple flower buds develop with yellow-red flowers that bloom in succession. After flowering, large, round seed pods form, which also have a decorative value. The roots multiply well underground every year, which makes the plant very popular among gardeners.

How, where and when do I plant canna tubers?

Indoor pre-growth

A Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' is not winter hardy. This means that the tubers can be grown indoors from March. This gives them a head start in growth, which means that the cannas will flower earlier. The plants can be put outside after the Ice Saints (15 May), or earlier if the weather is good, but watch out for night frost. In that case, they must be brought back inside at night.

Outside in the garden

If you choose to wait to plant the canna tubers until after the frost, it is best to do so after May 15. From then on, the tubers can be planted in the ground without any risk of frost and will flower approximately 60-90 days later. Plant the canna tuber with the new growth shoots upwards, approximately 2 to 3 centimeters below the ground, and keep a distance of half a meter between the tubers. The planting period runs until June.

Location

A canna prefers a sunny location in a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, preferably a chalky sandy soil. The Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' grows to about 70 cm high and has sturdy, reed-like flower stems with medium-sized flowers. This means they do not need to be supported. It is advisable to place the plant in a sheltered spot. For pot planting, we recommend a pot with a minimum width of 40 centimeters, so that the plant does not dry out too quickly in the summer.

Care

Keep the soil of the Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' moist at all times. Too dry soil can cause problems with growth and flowering. The plant flowers for about 6 to 8 weeks. Let the leaves die off completely so that the plant can collect as much energy as possible for the following year. In the autumn, you can cut the withered plant back to the ground. Protect the tubers that are planted in the open ground from light frost with a layer of leaves in the winter. In severe frost, the tubers must be stored frost-free and in a dry place. An advantage of digging up the tubers is that they can then be divided every year.

Feed the plant several times a year for optimal results. The canna is a fast-growing plant that can use a lot of nutrition. For organic potting soil, plant food, and other soil improvers we recommend Bio Kultura!

Propagation

In the autumn, the tubers continue to grow well. Do not remove the tubers from the ground too early for propagation; the best time is just before the first frost. The canna tubers can best be divided in the spring, when they are put back into the ground. This helps prevent damage to the tubers and mold formation during winter storage. Preferably store the tubers in a layer of peat or sand in the winter. We recommend dividing the Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' every 2 to 3 years.

Edible

The tubers of Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' are very starchy. The taste is similar to sweet potato and the leaves have a lemony taste when grilled or steamed.

Origin

The Canna 'Stadt Fellbach' is native to Central and South America. The name 'flower reed' is derived from the Celtic word 'cana', which refers to a type of reed.
