Organic Dinnerplate Dahlia 'Arthur Hambley'
The Dahlia 'Arthur Hambley' belongs to the dinnerplate dahlias, known for their impressively large double-flowered flowers of 25 to 30 centimeters wide. The flowers are pink and have pointed petals. These beautiful flowers bloom for weeks and are often used in flower arrangements and bouquets because of their size and beauty.
The plant has dark green leaves and grows to about a meter high, with several sturdy, light green flower stems. A tuber can produce 10 to 15 flowers per year, spread over 100 days, flowering from summer until the first frost. The result is a sea of flowers late in the season.
How, where and when do I plant the 'Arthur Hambley' Dahlia?
Indoor pre-growth
'Arthur Hambley' dahlias are not winter hardy. From March the tubers can be grown indoors to flower earlier. The plants can go outside after the Ice Saints (15 May), or earlier if the weather is good, but watch out for night frost.
Outside in the garden
The tubers can be planted outside after the frost (until 15 May), approximately 2 to 3 centimetres under the ground with a distance of half a metre between the tubers. Flowering starts 60 to 90 days later. The planting period runs until June.
Location
Dahlias prefer a sunny, sheltered spot in nutritious, well-drained, chalky, sandy soil. Because of the large flowers, support is sometimes necessary. We do not recommend planting 'Arthur Hambley' in a pot, unless it is a large, well-drained pot.
Dahlias topping
Topping dahlias encourages compact, full growth. Top the plant when it has developed 2 to 4 pairs of leaves. Cut just above a leaf node with a sharp, clean pair of secateurs. This encourages side branching, which produces more flowers.
Caring for the Dahlia 'Arthur Hambley'
Keep the soil moist; drying out can affect growth and flowering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new growth. After the first frost, the plant can be cut back to the ground. Protect tubers in the ground with leaves from light frost or store them frost-free in severe frost. Tubers can be divided annually.
For optimal growth, the dahlia needs regular feeding. We recommend organic potting soil and soil improvers, such as Bio-Kultura .
Propagation
Propagate the tubers by dividing them in the fall or spring. Divide in the spring when the growing points are visible, so that the best places to divide are easy to see.
Edible
Organic dahlias are completely edible. The tubers have a carrot-like flavor, and the flowers can be used in salads or to decorate and flavor water.
Origin of the Dahlia
Dahlias originate from Mexico and have been cultivated in European gardens since 1615. They were first grown as edible tubers, but because of their beauty as ornamental plants they have become one of the most diverse plant species.
