Organic pink dahlia mix
The Dahlia 'Pink Poetry' mix is a combination of 3 pink dahlia varieties with different flower types. The Dahlia 'Cafe au Lait' is a large-flowered dinner plate dahlia that can be planted in the background because of its large double flowers. The Dahlia 'Park Princess' remains a little lower with its medium-sized flowers, formed by many pointed petals and the Dahlia 'Sandra' is also planted in the background and has ball-shaped flowers at a height of one meter with long flower stems that are extremely suitable for cutting for in a vase.
A dahlia blooms because countless flowers come back when you remove the spent flowers, up to 100 days a year. A veritable sea of flowers, late in the season when most plants have already finished blooming.
How, where and when do I plant organic dahlia tubers?
Indoor pre-growth
A dahlia is not winter hardy. This means the tubers can be grown indoors from March onwards, giving them a head start in growth and allowing the dahlias to bloom earlier. The plants can be placed outside after the Ice Saints (May 15), or earlier if the weather is good, but be careful of night frost; they will need to be brought back inside at night.
Outside in the garden
If you choose to wait until after frost before planting the dahlia tubers, it is best to do so until May 15. From then on, the tubers can be planted in the ground without the risk of frost and will bloom approximately 60 to 90 days later. Plant the tuber with its old flower stem from last year upwards, just 2 to 3 centimeters below the ground and keep a distance of half a meter from tuber to tuber.
The planting time is until June.
Location
A dahlia prefers a sunny position in a nutrient-rich, water-permeable, preferably calcareous, sandy soil.
The dahlias grow up to a meter high with large flowers, so we recommend supporting the plants and possibly planting them in a sheltered spot.
For pot planting, it is best to use a pot that is at least 40 centimeters wide, so that it does not dry out too quickly in the summer.
Topping dahlias
Topping a dahlia is a technique to stimulate growth and make the plant more compact and fuller. Dahlias are topped when they reach a certain height, usually when they are in the active growth stage. We recommend growing at least 2 to 4 pairs of leaves before topping.
A leaf node is where a leaf is attached to the stem. Look at the top pairs of leaves on the stem. Use sharp, clean pruning shears and cut the stem just above a leaf node. Make sure you make a sharp cut so as not to damage the plant. If there are flower buds under the topped spot, you can also remove them. This helps the plant to put more energy into developing side branches. After topping, the dahlia will start developing side branches from the leaf axils, resulting in a more flowery plant.
Care of the dahlia
Always keep the soil of the dahlia moist. Too dry soil can cause problems with growth and flowering.
During flowering, the spent flowers are removed for new blooms. When the plant has finished blooming in the fall, it is best to die completely, so that no water gets into the hollow flower stems when they are cut, to prevent rotting.
Dahlias and nutrition
The dahlia is a fast-growing plant that can use a lot of nutrition. Feed the plant several times a year for optimal results.
We recommend organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers Bio Kultura On!
What to do with dahlias in the fall?
Protect the tubers planted in the open ground with leaves against light frost in winter. In severe frost they should be stored frost-free in a dry place. The advantage of digging out is that the tuber can be divided every year.
Giving back to nature
In the autumn, the remains of the dead plant can be cut off and incorporated into the soil for nutrition. This way you give back to nature and your green bin remains empty for vegetable waste from the kitchen.
Propagation of dahlia tubers
The dahlia tubers continue to grow well in the autumn. Do not remove the tubers from the ground too early for propagation. Just before the first frost is the best time. The tubers can be split immediately, but this can also be done in the spring. The advantage of splitting in the spring is that small growth points can already be seen in the spring. This makes it easy to recognize where the tuber can best be split.
Edible
Everything on the dahlia is edible. The tuber tastes carroty and the flower can be used to garnish a salad or in a carafe with water, for decoration and to flavor the water.
Origin of the dahlia
Dahlias are native to Mexico and have been found in European gardens since the year 1615. Originally they were grown as tubers for consumption, but after discovering how beautiful they can be as an ornamental plant, they grew into one of the most diverse plant species in the world.
