Flower bulb lasagne planting

Lasagne planting or layer planting are methods of planting flower bulbs in a pot or even in the garden in a way that creates multiple layers. This creates a beautiful and long-lasting flowering arrangement that you can enjoy from February to July every year!

The Bloemoloog® has selected for you:

  • 10 Organic Crocus vernus 'Jeanne d'Arc'
  • 10 Organic Crocus vernus 'King of the Striped'
  • 10 Organic Narcissus 'Tete Rosette'
  • 10 Organic Scilla 'Siberica'
  • 10 Organic Tulipa clusiana 'Taco'
  •   3 Organic Hyacinthus orientalis 'Pearl mix'
  •   1 Organic Allium albopilosum 'Christophii'

The photos are arranged according to flowering time. The white crocus blooms first in February and the Allium 'Christophii' last in May and June. The allium can be dried after flowering for longer flower enjoyment!

With lasagne planting, the pot is built up in layers, as it were, comparable to stacking lasagne. Each layer contains a different type of flower bulb with a different flowering time. This allows flowers to follow each other and you can enjoy a succession of flowering bulbs throughout the season.

How do I plant a pot for lasagne planting?

  • Choose a pot about 30 to 50 centimeters wide and also about that high with drainage holes at the bottom and fill the bottom with a layer of potting soil for good drainage.
  • Place the largest and late-blooming flower bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, at the bottom of the pot. Make sure the bulbs do not touch each other and leave space between the bulbs and the sides of the pot.
  • Cover the first layer of bulbs with a layer of potting soil. This creates a separation between the layers and prevents the bulbs from rotting.
  • Place the next layer of flower bulbs on top of the potting soil. Choose bulbs that are slightly smaller and bloom earlier than the bulbs in the bottom layer.
  • Repeat the previous steps until you have added all the desired layers, with each layer having different bloom times and types of bulbs.
  • Make sure that the top layer of bulbs is covered with a layer of potting soil to protect the bulbs.
  • Water the pot after planting so that the soil is moist. Place the pot in a place where it receives sufficient sunlight.

Care

If you have potted bulbs outside and a frost spell is forecast, protect the pots by moving them to a sheltered location such as a shed or garage. If that is not possible, cover the pots with straw or a thick layer of mulch to protect the bulbs from the cold.

Water the flower bulbs regularly, especially during the growing season. Make sure the soil is evenly moist, but avoid making the potting soil too soggy. Too much water can lead to root rot. Check the moisture of the soil regularly by inserting your finger about 2 centimeters deep into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water.

Once the flowers have finished blooming, remove the spent flower stems. However, leave the foliage alone. The green foliage of the flower bulbs is needed to store nutrients for the next growing season. You can cut off the foliage after it has completely yellowed and died.

If you want to store the flower bulbs in pots for the next season, you can store the pots in a warm, dark place, such as a shed. Make sure the bulbs are completely dry before storing them.

Add annual organic nutrients for annual blooms.
